Kurokami dual audio

<< < (5/5)

MTR:
I'm not surprised that Funimation doesn't view this as a problem. They're fully a R1 anime company, and reverse importation means more money for them. Whether the money is coming from this country or another one, it's still more sales.

I can see why Bandai Visual sees it as an issue, however. They work not only in the R1 market, but Japan as well. I would assume that they are responsible for the release of the Japanese Blu-Ray as well and want sales to be focused on that. TBH, I don't see the big deal their either. Bandai is making money whether the Japanese buy the American BD or the Japanese BD; they're just not making AS MUCH money, since the American release is quite cheaper.

OZC:
But I'm not saying Funi sees it as a problem. Of course they wouldn't, as you said. Who would see it as a problem is the Japanese distributor. Let's use FMA:B, DB Kai and Eva 1.11, on BD, as an example. Using prices on Amazon.com vs. Amazon.co.jp as a guide:

FMA:B
US (E1-13) - $29.99 USD
JP (4 individual discs, E1-14) - 18,545 yen / $203.41 USD using Google's currency conversion.

DB Kai
US (E1-13) - $31.99 USD
JP (1 single, 1 box, E1-15) - 13830 Yen / $151.69 USD

Eva 1.11
US - $13.99 USD
JP - 4,487 Yen / $49.22 USD

So what is it that makes Aniplex, Toei, and Gainax unafraid to let Funi release dual audio BDs here that cost so much less, yet Bandai Visual is afraid to allow it? Yes, obviously shipping would increase the price, but even with that factored in, aside from having to wait for an R1 release, it would be radically cheaper for a Japanese person to wait for the R1 BD.

Bandai Visual and Bandai Entertainment are arms of the same parent company, but BV no longer has a presence in the US, with the exception of Gundam Unicorn (which, Amazon discounts aside, costs the same in the US as it does in Japan). As it stands, Bandai Visual has the same presence in the US that Aniplex and Toei do; they license to a US-based distributor.

Sure, for shows that Funi does their own upscales on, like Trinity Blood, the Japanese distributors probably don't care too much about since they don't have a competing Blu-ray release there, but like I said, somehow, these companies aren't concerned with reverse importation on these products, so why is Bandai Visual so worried about it?
