I'm also a decent veteran of Miku fandom (starting in 08) but trust me, what you call "a huge fanbase" of miku, touhou can outdo, outmake, outnumber, and outsource Miku in every aspect, every form, every category there ever is.

When Miku get's it's own damn convention like Comiket like touhou does (Reitaisai with an average of around 40k attendees or when Miku get's over 800 circles DEDICATED to her at Comiket (which has a maximum of 1500), tell me I'll be waiting.
Basically half of comiket is dominated by touhou. Miku? eh, maybe 5 or 10 circles.
