blea friggin RROD
kenshin-dono:
So i got myself a RROD on my 360. this is actually my 3rd xbox. I got one a long time ago and it started to crap out. it would get disk read errors. Luckily i had bought a warranty at the store at the time for like 25 bucks (think it was EB backw hen they existed) and i swaped it out for a new one.. that was DOA out of the box! So i took it back imediatly and got this one that now gave me the dreaded RROD. I figure some of you have probably got this so id ask for some repair advice
Im pretty sure its out of warranty. The mfctr date is 7-2006. I didn't buy it around then though, i think i bought ita t the very start of 2007 Xbox site shows it out of warranty. I'll try calling them and see if i can get it repaired for free but i seriously doubt it.
These things are such piles of junk. I dont know anyone who isn't at least on their 2nd one.
Anyway, does anyone know a good repair guide to fix these things? Ive got an average level ot technical skills im sure if i have a decent guide i can pop it open and mess with the screwed up solder/ect. I just need to know what i need to replace and what to remove. i did some goggling but most of the videos that look good you have to pay for or something. Most of the other stuff is stupid towel tricks. I want to actually open it and replace the xclamp or whatever else needs to be swapped out. Id like to desolder and resolder the flux but i dont think i have tools for that at all.
I really dont want to go buy another xbox. I just realized i droped over 1500 bucks the past month or two on retro grames on ebay =P
so can anyone point me to a good guide?

just go to the xbox website, register your xbox with them (you just need to input the serial code next tot the power cord). Then just click on repair your console, pick the options you prefer, and make sure you select '3 flashing red lights' as the problem and they'll give you a box+shipping label. Send it to them, and within a month (for me its always been about ~13 days) you'll get back either the same console repaired, or a new one.

I know when my first one crapped out on me it said it was also no longer covered under warranty but they took it anyway.

knock on wood i been lucky ive had my xbox for i think 3 or 4 years and luckily it still runs like a fuckin champ
kenshin-dono:
ya you guys were right. Even though it said out of warranty they still honored it, so im sending it in tuesday i guess.
still i think i may buy a new one anyway since i have an old 20gig hd, and use the refurbished one i get back as a backup console on the 2nd tv int he bedroom.
Which brings me to another problem... whats the best way to transfer my profile/score/themes/avatars/and most importantly patches and DLC over to the new system/HD? I remember reading that there is some nightmares with digital rights managment if the HD/data doesn't match the original console it was downloaded to. I need to make sure the stuff works properly (i.e. i remember dragon age wouldn't even work right if i wasn't online to verify that it was the same console)
Does MS still provide you with those HD transfer cables? Even if they do, how do i fix the DRM issues?
