video card update
« on: May 31, 2010, 09:49:55 PM »
Hey i am currently thinking about updating my video card. Right now i am using a Nividia GeForce 8600 gs (which i cant find support for cause its OEM or something) I was thinking about updating it with a SAPPHIRE 100283L Radeon HD 5770 and i was wondering if this update is worth the 200$. First time updating anything in a pc before so any advice or tips is appreciated thanks.

The Radeon 5770 would be a huge upgrade over the GeForce 8600. The 5770 is pretty much the perfect sweet spot between budget and performance right now.

What kind of CPU do you have? A PC that came with an 8600 might not have a powerful enough CPU for modern games, meaning a video card update would be a waste of money.

I want to get this to replace my MSI 9600 GT.

The 8600 GS wasn't particularly impressive when it first came out so it definitely is a worth while upgrade if you have the money.

8800GT + E2180 = 1080p with CoreAVC or w/o depend on bitrate ;)
AC, AC2, Crysis, ME, ME2, Batman AA all playable on high :)
It's super good for me :)

Mayby try 8800GT :) it's very good GPU

I upgraded from a Sapphire 4870 a while back. Becouse the of the noise level.

Got a HIS 5750 IceQ now, its pretty nice.
Less noise and becouse its smaller than the xx70 cards i could fit another fan in the case.

My problem with the 5750 is that its memory bandwidth is too slow. The biggest difference between teh 5750 and the 5770 is the memory bandwidth. The 5770's VRAM is about 50% faster. The GPU is about 30% faster.

I'd say that's good enough

The 5770 is a bit faster and supports DX11. The 8800GT was a good card, but its time has passed; it doesn't even support DX10.1.
And those games play at 1080p? With all the eye candy + AA? At or above 60 FPS? I doubt it. I had to turn Batman down to 576p with no AA, and some lighting effects turned off to get it to work with even medium PhysX when I had a 9800GT. Just Cause 2 can bring even my GTX 470 down to 15FPS at times, and it crushes the 9800GT.
