Random Things I Learned From My Trip to Tokyo
« on: June 01, 2010, 10:44:01 PM »
Here are a few observations my roommate and I made during our recent trip to Tokyo & the vicinity:

1) They really do have 4 foot tall old people.

2) The David Bowie look is still "in".

3) A crow WILL steal your tamago if you don't guard it carefully.

4) Thank heaven for 7-11... no, really!

5) What happens in Shinjuku stays in Shinjuku.

6) They have uniforms for everything, but the uniforms are too cute to be taken seriously.

7) Considering the lack of trash cans and napkins, Tokyo is the cleanest damn city I've ever seen.

8) Screwdrivers (and other cocktails) come in cans, and you can win yogurt from a claw (UFO) machine. Also, why bother to buy vodka & Coke separately when you can buy them pre-mixed in a can (Cola Shock).

9) 50% of the people on any given train are asleep. The other 50% are texting or listening to MP3 players or both.  10% of people will eye you surreptitiously then avoid making eye contact.

10) Nobody wears shorts or red shirts.

11) That blazing light coming in through the hotel window at 4am is, in fact, the sun.

12) 95% of all communication can be accomplished successfully through use of "Thank you" (arigato gozaimasu) and "Excuse me" (sumimasen) when used with some combination of gesturing and a confused expression.

13) Schoolgirls and cosplayers really do exist... and we are too damn old to be watching anime and going into the shops that sell it.

14) Stairs -- Japan's way of telling me to get into shape.  Or to take the escalator / elevator.

15) Even the Europeans give us funny looks.

16) Akiba at night = your senses raped.

Haha that's one thing I'm not looking forward too ... I'm turning 30 this summer and I'm sure me and my mate will get "the look" when we go to Tokyo

Yeah, it was definitely weird looking around the shops and thinking, "Geez, most of these kids are young enough to be my children..."

Btw, what do you exactly mean with "Even the Europeans give us funny looks"? What did you do to get yourself that noticed :p

Why would even Europeans give you a strange look?

7) Considering the lack of trash cans and napkins, Tokyo is the cleanest damn city I've ever seen.

Be on the street in Shibuya between 12am and 6am and think again^^

I knew nothing of the outside world. I was just a frog in a well.

Japanese people only (generally) smoke the tip of their cigarettes. (25% to 50%) They generally don't go all the way down.

At least that's what I saw when I was in Tokyo.

What? They don't smoke all the way? What a waste, cigarettes are expensive!! Smoking itself is a very expensive addiction.

Beats the hell out of me… maybe because my roommate looks like he belongs in a death metal band?  We were actually very careful not to be the stereotypical “Ugly American”.  But we did get a few dirty looks for no real reason.  It was pretty amusing, actually.

We were in Shibuya at 12pm, and I thought the place was filthy!  Actually, that WAS the only part of town I’ve seen that I thought was dirty.  The rest of what we saw in Tokyo was generally much cleaner.

Cigarettes must be cheaper there then ... a packet of 30 cigarettes costs 6€ in Belgium (7,3$ / 112¥) which has an average income of 1000€ - 1200€
Otherwise talking about throwing your money away  ???

Well when you smoke the worst stuff from cigarette is in the last third of it, so if you do not smoke that part it is a bit healthier. You smoke it and all the bad stuff pile up at the end of it and so on.
But I still think that it is kind of stupid to do this -you smoke, it is not healthy, and you want to do it the healthy way. Kind of does not compute with me.

How was the night life? (club/bar scene) Did you check it out? If so, how'd that go? Have any interesting encounters? Lots of people go to Japan in these forums but most (all) never talk about the night life entertainment. I just assume they're younger or uninterested, so they don't go. To me though, that's just as much important a culture experience as visiting famous shrines and tourist traps.

I would have checked it out already, but doing so takes both time and money, something which I seem to only have one of the other of at any given time -_- have money while going to school but no time, have time on break but no money.

Although I live in a rather big town here (well not at the moment) but my town is rather clubs deprived so I was kinda overwhelmed by what Shibuya had to offer when I was there in 2006. There are dozens of bars/lounges etc. My favorite at that time was a bar lounge called ZARU.
Clubs... well, expensive but well spent, imo. I was in a club called Womb.

I knew nothing of the outside world. I was just a frog in a well.

Heard this one mentioned a lot by some fellow Drum 'n Bass dj's, seems it is quite the place to be as a musiclover

I've heard stuff like certain bars/karaoke places allow all you can drink for 15-25 USD. (Yes, I'm talking alcohol).

Well, I'll be the first to admit, I'm an introvert in his mid-30s... I'm pretty average looking, I don't dance, etc.  It takes near an act of God to get me to socialize with strangers.  I don't go clubbing or bar-hopping in my hometown, where I speak the language and know the area, so in truth I didn't hit any of that action in Tokyo.

My roommate, however, is considerably more social than I am, but by mutual agreement, we will not disclose any details of his (mis)adventures.  (See # 5 -- What happens in Shinjuku stays in Shinjuku.)   ;D

15) Even the Europeans give us funny looks.

Especially the Europeans give us funny looks.

Only Japanese children give me weird looks, the adults don't. The European and American tourists give me dirty looks. I think it's because they're pissed off they're seeing other white people while on vacation in Asia. They can go fuck themselves, I live here (in Japan).

The linear nature of your Euclidean geometry both confounds and befuddles me.

LOL, we talked to a few other tourists -- Americans and I think a couple of Australians, and they were pretty cool.  And a few younger school kids did talk to us once or twice.

Oh yeah, speaking of school kids, I forgot to add this to the list:

17) Every day is field trip day.

(I don’t think there was a day when we didn't see literally a horde of kids in uniforms running around wherever we were at.)
