I'm not sure if that popping sound was me having a nerdgasm or my mind being blown. Anyone else planning to build one?

Concept is cool but not something I would want.
I want all of my servers to be able to fit in a rack.

very cool setup. Its small and holds a lot of space. Troubleshooting it will be a pain to do and switching HDD looks like to be hard too. I wouldn't get it because well the fact is that is a file server and that's it. I rather have a server that can host different things and not just files on a local network only

Well Black Dwarf seems like a good one, portable 8 TB. But I was more excited by the videos posted by erious, the manufacturing process,  it's very cool!.

It sure would be awesome to have, but it wouldn't serve a big purpose for me.

@K7IA, It's 16TB. :]

8 x 2 = 8  :-D

now that I think of it, 16 TB IS INDEED BIG

off-topic: MPAA doesn't have to mess with ISPs and try to identify who is illegally downloading movies, they can automatically send a warning letter to who ever buys multiple 1TB HDDs  :D

I think I'd rather get a drobo. :\ They look better, and have more... functional redundancy than raid5. Though it's a bad time to buy storage hardware; I'm waiting until the 2.1Tb issue is resolved as I don't want to be stuck with a max of 2Tb drives with 3Tb ones due soon.

I don't know about that. There are other reasons why I may need a 2 TB HDD...and will be needing another one by the end of the summer.

Of course we are going to engage in evasive maneuvers if we ever receive such a warning, but I doubt they will directly blame someone :-D,

Dear John Benetton,

We have received word that you have purchased yet another brand new 1 TB Samsung HDD from your favorite electronics retailer. Omedetou gozaimasu
We hope that you don't store copyright infringing content on your brand new HDD and make the same mistake your neighbor P2P-Fred did :)
Also make sure that you have assigned a STRONG password for your wireless network access this time and that your scientific data does not contain encrypted hollywood movies.

TY, MPAA

- just kidding -

----

If this turns into an external storage frenzy - now that HD movies occupy roughly 4-12 GB, I wonder about 3D movies - they had better revive the 5.25" HDD drives.

Anyone remember the 5.25" hdds? They were the size of an internal DVD drive that we use on desktop cases.

Considering their platter size - without this 2.1 TB limit?? - and number of platters it can hold (I recall 5 platters) you can expect 10 times more capacity with the current technology (I am exaggeration) on a single drive.

Put one of those in the World's greatest server, you are done.

How about 67TB ?

Yes! Me and a few friends were thinking about building a couple of them. But we decided to go another route. I think a 40TB server will do us well for a few months :P

I'd rather get a normal server with redundancy and everything. Also, in that one, the hard drives are at an angle, which, IIRC is bad for them - hard drives have to be within a few degrees from horizontal or vertical plane.

Also, rackmount case ftw. Even if I don't have the rack (why are they so expensive?) :)

Yus! Rackmount FTW! You can find cheap racks or even free racks using sites like kijiji (canada) or even ebay. Only problem is shipping but if it's not fare and you have a truck then it's worth it. Why buy new when you can get used for 1/10 the cost?!?

I live in Lithuania, so buying a rack on ebay from another country would most likely be more expensive than buying a new one locally. And I cannot find where they sell used racks locally. Maybe I will find someday...

Keep an eye on call centers and what not.. Normally when they close they tend to leave the racks behind.. Just ask if they want to get ride of it and take it.
I've been looking for a rack for sometime and the only place that I can get them is 14h drive away... road trip!

Its actually not 16TB more like 14TB when you count space lost for redundancy in RAID5

Already seen it :P
No not worth having a NAS imo.
With eSata being on more an more mobo's it's becomming cheaper to just hang one to your pc :p
eSata unit that is ;)
Nas is only more fun when you want to share with everbody in a house who's connected to the network :P

Still it's and awesome build for it's power consumption ;)
