Dead pixles: How deadly?
« on: June 12, 2010, 12:31:49 AM »
I just bought a Toshiba L 505 for my mother and discovered it had a dead pixel, I returned it and ordered a new one, it arrived yesterday, again with a dead pixel. My mom hates waiting cause she is working on a project ATM and would like to stay with the laptop. . .Im not sure tho cause IIRC and AFAIK dead pixels tend to "kill" other pixles near them?
can someone confirm that? should I return it? Its just a little tiny pixel that she can barely notice, what Im worried about is the dead pixel spreading.

=/

Dead pixels are contagious. They're kind of like the chicken box. Once you see one, there's just more and more of them!! Soon you can't see anything at all! I would advise your mother to see a health-care professional right away.

Yes, there's a chance that it's a stuck pixel. If that's the case, you can rub it out or sometimes it will fix itself.

I've never heard of dead pixels killing surrounding pixels. I have friends who've had dead pixels and have just put up with it for years, but they have never spread.

Dead pixels are...... deadly, but stuck ones are ok, I have one, it's been 2 years already.

I have a pixel thats stuck at 100% blue. It was like that when I unboxed it. I can't tell its there unless I look. Its there, has been there for years, and is still the only pixel with a problem.

Dead Pixels are white (The LCD's neutral color), stuck pixels are opaque (or partly opaque). I'd prefer a completely stuck pixel (all three colors stuck) than dead one. A black stuck pixel on a white background is saturated by the surrounding bright pixels. A dead pixel on a black background will cause you to zero in on it when playing any kind of game. I've had a stuck pixel on my 22" since i bought it and i barely notice it. It's been a year and so far it's still the only one.

Since it's a specific problem, how about bringing it to an authorized service center and have them replace the LCD rather than replacing the whole unit. Quality control for replacement parts is often better than factory.
