I actually went back and tried out the original game earlier this year. Nostalgia was all it was for me when I recalled how good it was, nothing like c&c 1 that is still good in its own way.

totalwar was alot more fun back during the frist few patchs for rome. in those versions you only had to just win fights to make your general's aquire traits and more experience. after the patchs it just became fucking gay to make a good general, i think only an epic battle would ever give them experience......... stupid crap really when you don't really have any control over such events, only what your own army is doing.

I loved number 1, can't go wrong with samurai and Risk.

Add me to the "can't wait" list. I was really curious about the future of TW after Empire/Napoleon.

Couldn't you have huge numbers in earlier TW titles by simply changing a single number in a single file?

Edit, that seems to have been just one of the TW games. For the others you needed to do slightly more to change it.

*bump* so everyone, how is your campaign getting along? I started with the Date on Legendary difficulty, expecting little resistance from my previous TW Games experience.. and boy did i get dismantled. I find it very difficult even on the Hard setting, which is actually quite nice if you ask me, finally a challenge. I really think they saved the franchise from the disaster that was Empire: Total War. Sometimes less is indeed more. Really digging it so far.  ;D

I also like it a lot more. Legendary is sick. You pretty much have to advance instantly since you can't support as large stacks as the opponent can at the start. Then you have to manually win battles with pretty low losses.

The real problem with legendary is that pretty much everybody declares war on you in sequence. Once you get near their borders, bam, war. Makes it hard to expand since you can't match several factions worth of armies and navies.

I like that we are back at melee combat, TW is all about the melee combat with ranged support. Managing morale in the middle of a hectic brawl is part of what makes the combat fun. The new navy combat is somewhat fun as well, but not fun enough to want to play it.

I've been playing the game far too much, to the extent that I've barely done anything else outside of attending my classes. I have managed to complete two campaigns on legendary, however, so I feel reasonably confident that I have mastered the SP portion of the game.

The MP portion... needs work. It can be great fun, bugs notwithstanding, but the balance is lacking. Leadership builds with ashigaru loan sword swarms with the appropriate retainers are horribly overpowered, and cannon bunes need to be toned down to a level where whoever has them doesn't automatically win a naval engagement. Increasing the cost of the avatar is all well and good, but it leads to problems in games with small funds—especially in siege battles. Good luck defending a fort with 2500 funds when your general costs 1300.

Anyone here who is familiar with Europe Barbarorum?
How does this compare to it?
Worth getting?

Not being able to support large stacks and having to win with little losses sounds promising but the war crazy AI is still there? I've always hated that in the series, You've been allies for 100 years and you're currently in war against a common enemy(is) and the moment you get common borders, BAM! War!

To be honest so far my favourite game in the series is Rome: Total War.

Unlike most campaigns in other total war games where you should be careful who you attack and be aware of other armies, in Rome, it's like: "Here is the best disciplined army in the world, now go out there and conquer the world from the savages. There you go, good chap!"

I hope that gameplay wise Shogun 2 will be good, and I bet it will. However the concept is not that impressive. You are fighting a civil war on a small island? Not even close to the epicness of other total war games.

Also Rome is the most hilarious game because: incendiary pigs  ;D
For one thing, Tiff is not on any level what I would call a typical American.  She's not what I would consider a typical person.  I don't know any other genius geneticist anime-fan martial artist marksman model-level beauties, do you?

There is a victory condition that is to hold 60 provinces. So it isn't all that small. That it is an island means maritime powers have an edge they don't really have in most other TW games. They also added in trading posts with areas outside of Japan. Stationing trade ships there and trading that monopoly inland gives a decent income source.

I do agree that Rome has the best setting though, just for the reason you stated. Diplomacy, what is that?

That AI is still there. There is even a condition you must fulfil that has large negative impacts on your relationships with other clans.

It's not as bad as it used to be, though; in Empire I used to sell off land on the first turn to avoid having half the world declare war on me. In Shogun 2 the AI will generally honour alliances, as long as you understand the mechanics to keep it happy.

ie. Constant tribute? That's pretty much the only thing that works in the earlier versions.
