Shogun 2 Total war
vuzedome:
Watch me run over them archers with my ponies~!
Gets them every time. ;D

To be honest so far my favourite game in the series is Rome: Total War.
Unlike most campaigns in other total war games where you should be careful who you attack and be aware of other armies, in Rome, it's like: "Here is the best disciplined army in the world, now go out there and conquer the world from the savages. There you go, good chap!"
I hope that gameplay wise Shogun 2 will be good, and I bet it will. However the concept is not that impressive. You are fighting a civil war on a small island? Not even close to the epicness of other total war games.
Also Rome is the most hilarious game because: incendiary pigs ;D

There is a victory condition that is to hold 60 provinces. So it isn't all that small. That it is an island means maritime powers have an edge they don't really have in most other TW games. They also added in trading posts with areas outside of Japan. Stationing trade ships there and trading that monopoly inland gives a decent income source.
I do agree that Rome has the best setting though, just for the reason you stated. Diplomacy, what is that?

I've always hated that in the series, You've been allies for 100 years and you're currently in war against a common enemy(is) and the moment you get common borders, BAM! War!

That AI is still there. There is even a condition you must fulfil that has large negative impacts on your relationships with other clans.
Path:
It's not as bad as it used to be, though; in Empire I used to sell off land on the first turn to avoid having half the world declare war on me. In Shogun 2 the AI will generally honour alliances, as long as you understand the mechanics to keep it happy.

ie. Constant tribute? That's pretty much the only thing that works in the earlier versions.
