Correct color space for taking screenshots and watching?
(1/1)
jokli:
I noticed that many decoders offer the choice to convert the color space from the given one to RGB for the output in their preferences.
My config:
* OS: Windows XP SP3
* Player environment: CCCP 2009-09-09
* Graphics card: NVIDIA 7900GT
* Decoder: CoreAVC 2.0
* Input levels: Auto detect
* Output levels: PC (0-255)
* Deinterlacing: None (Weave)
* Input Colorspace: Auto detect
* Deblocking: Standard
* The rest: Only "Preferred decoder" and "Tray icon" (I don't have a CUDA capable card) checked, all other unchecked
* Renderer: VMR9 (renderless)
* Surface: 3D surfaces (recommended)
* Resizer: Bicubic A=-0.75 (PS 2.0) [shouldn't matter here]
* D3D fullscreen: off
* VMR9 mixer mode: on
* Alternative VSync: off
* YUV mixing: off
After reading Microsoft's page on the YUV Mixing Mode I think turning YUV mixing on will only result in decreased quality, so I won't post screenshots for it turned on here.
Info for the interested users: The "Same as"-comments remain the same after turning it on but all screenshots are slightly different compared to the versions with YUV mixing off; furthermore the RGB results are quite different, with the option on, they are much brighter.
I have tried most of the available color spaces separately on the file [UTW-THORA] Evangelion 2.22 - You Can (Not) Advance [BD][1080p,x264,DTS-ES][8B521921].mkv at the first frame of the scene @ 00:08.44 (frame 12567).
After setting the output color space in CoreAVC's settings, I restarted MPC HC and took the according screenshot.
Here are the results:
Color space NoteYV12I420 Similar to the one beforeNV12 Similar to the one beforeYUY2 Similar to the one beforeUYVY Exactly the same as with YUY2RGB32 Quite a difference compared to previous ones; stronger colorsRGB24 Exactly the same as with RGB32
By calculating the CRC32 values of the YUY2/UYVY and RGB32/RGB24 results, I have seen they are exactly the same.
Which format shall I take when
* taking screenshots?
* watching the show on a usual RGB monitor?Does the BakaBT staff prefer any combination of settings?
Naively I would guess that RGB(24+) is the appropriate choice because that's what my monitor is displaying. Am I right?
Furthermore the question arises whether one should choose PC (0-255) or TV (16-235).
Thank you very much for your help.
