Stats problem
« on: July 10, 2010, 09:34:52 PM »
I have noticed that my stats are only counting a small percentage of my up/down usage.
for example:

utorrent 2.0.2 reports 2.26 GB uploaded.

However in my seeded torrents I see

only 503MB upped.

I know that my torrent pass is correct and it does correctly show all the files I am seeding.  My bonus points increase at their normal rate as well.  I only noticed this problem within the past few days as it was working just fine before.  No changes to my software or network config.  I will state that I have used an encrypted vpn from the start of using bakabt (for privacy and ip obfuscation) but I don't see how that would matter as I am identified by my torrent pass which is all confirmed working.  Like I said this only started a few days ago to my knowledge.  Any help would be most appreciated.  :)

p.s. Could this be due to torrent traffic not passing through the tracker.  Peer exchange or something along those lines?

Also the info for a file i downloaded is wrong as well.

I downloaded this yesterday and as you can see it says I only downloaded 1.03GB but I am also seeding all 7.35GB of it which is kind of impossible

This is a torrent I downloaded earlier in the week.

It does report that I downloaded the whole 1.91 gb of the file.  However utorrent 2.0.2 reports I have upped 4.69GB not 3.98GB.  I assume this error is a lower facter due to the fact I have been seeding this file longer so it's not as affected by my recent problems.

Tracker went offline or your connection to the tracker timed out, happens all the time.

I have been watching utorrent and my stats page most of the day and my uploaded continues to go up in utorrent but my stats barely moves.  No message about the tracker being offline or unreachable in utorrent.  Are you saying this is normal and I should just deal with it?

Sorry, I'm a network engineer by trade and a variance of over 200% from one side of the connection to the other is not usually considered "normal" by any means.  I won't waste any more forum space on this issue if the answer is "working as intended."

It's likely not to be DHT or PEX because those are disabled. Try to watch your torrents a few consecutive updates and see if the tracker times out.

Hmm, I thought that it might be the split between seeding/seeded etc., but those torrents only appear in one of your tabs.

It simply can't be that the tracker is accurately tracking stats for everyone except you, if there is something affecting usually more people will complain of inaccurate stats. During the past couple of days there were a few tracker downtimes of a couple of hours which might explain some of those inconsistencies.
True, it shouldn't account for such a massive upload loss since interruptions weren't that long.

Only thing that might explain it was what Arveene already mentioned, it is possible that the tracker times out and you are unable to connect and report your transfer, but still remain connected to other peers and seed...
Things I can suggest are - check your firewall/router configuration, check up on tracker status line every now and again and possibly enable encryption and set to forced in case your ISP is messing with you (although this would be a first time I heard of such ISP meddling).

I have watched 2 tracker updates so far and they haven't timed out.  Like I said I am using an encrypted vpn so I don't know how they would be shaping my traffic based on packet snooping.  I suppose its possible they are throttling my entire connenction but traceroutes and continous pings are doing just fine.  I have enabled forced encryption and will keep watching for timeouts.  I will also start a new torrent downloading to compare the results.

Well I have watched six tracker updates and no timeouts.  Porco Rosso which I started about 40 mins ago reported the correct upload and download after updating.  Grenadier just updated and should have reported 41MB up and 2.23GB down but it stayed at 24MB up and 1.11GB down.  I assuming that if it misses an update it will report the correct info next update?  Or maybe those bytes are lost to the tracker forever.  I guess I don't really care as it's not really hurting my share ratio that bad since it effects the download as well.  O well.

Actually, recently I've been noticing more of these reports on the help forum. I think this might be the fifth or so report in the past, I dunno, month? And remember not everyone monitors their stats closely. I, for one, just leave my seeding box running and check it about once a week, so I don't expect to be submitting such a report.

I'm starting to think that maybe there is a bug somewhere. And, as noted, the differences are quite large, which is also consistent with other reports I remember seeing.

I think it'd be a good idea to at least take a look. There might be a problem, there might not be.

And shaggy619, don't double post; it's in the forum rules. If you want to say something and the last post on the thread is yours, edit your last post instead.

ISP caching perhaps? What's your location?

Some time ago there were a few posts about someone having trouble with Hong Kong isps caching torrents, which caused issues, however I can't find that specific threat. It was more of an issue of logging in as wrong user, but I suspect a badly configured cache implementation like that could have similar issues for actual torrent tracking...

Probably not in this case though as you're using vpn, unless it affects the vpn start-point.

I remember that. I think Jarudin said it had to do with the ISP holding cookies and sharing them on the same network, which caused one user to randomly log into accounts of other users on the same ISP. Something like that. I didn't really understand it myself all that well. But I doubt that would cause issues with stat reporting; if anything it would cause too high of an amount to be reported (due to multiple users logged into the same account and using the same torrent file), which is the opposite case to what we are seeing here.

Shit happens, to me and also to you.
I'm forgiving, how about you?

20%, maybe, if you're super lenient like I am, but if half of the amount you upload doesn't get credited, especially if this amounts to several gigs, I think maybe not so much. In his case, he's reporting a >75% loss, which is significantly more loss than you'd ever expect.

I'm in California and have a broadband over coaxial connection.  I have no user account for service, that is determined by mac address.  Like I said, when it happens it effects my downstream too which somewhat balances the impact on share ratio so I will deal with it for now.  I will continue to watch it and if I find anything relevent I will post it here.  Thx for everyone's help.  :)
