Agh my data
« on: July 14, 2010, 02:31:50 PM »
Got a crc error while seeding some file.
Checked with everest, it got 54 Celcius.
I already lost a 400gb of ANYTHING before because of unstable power source...
In this case, it is summer, and Prescott server is just next of external hdd.

Currently, I am chkdsk-ing my hdd. I wish that chkdsk do the good job.

Did you ever encountered a happenings like me?
I love Transformers, especailly Japanese ones!
Macross Frontier and Gaiking are good too.

I've corrupted some files while moving them from place to place, but nothing terribly important.

This is why you should have (tested) backups (although we're all terrible about doing that).

Worst thing that happened to me with data was that I lost all of my graphic work for a project I had been working on for two weeks, which needed to be handed in in two days, so I had to redo all that work in a couple of days... all because my computer randomly crashed and I had decided that I was going to leave backing everything up for one more day. I have my "super important" things cloned on 4 different hdd's... the rest is mostly anime and I keep track of that on MAL, so I could just dl them again whenever I decide to watch them if it ever came to losing them... :)

Well, than I can be better than those happenings.
I have fixed the overheating problems by using Lego+Notebook Cooler[...]
It lowed the heat to 53->40C...

Still, lose all data in 400GB.(Bad sectors and hardware header corruption)

I lost over 300 GB once. I was terrible. I never was able to get back about 25% of that. I'm currently transfering my DVD+R collection to HDD. So far I have lost about 100GB due to rot.

Approx. how many out of how many DVDs is that?

Heat doesn't usually kill HDDs, they're typically pretty resilient to it. Its totally more normal to lose the chip first in a notebook that's running too hot. But, whatever the reason, bad sectors often mean a failing disc, but maybe the heat simply caused corruption during writes (If you are lucky).

A good test is to run chkdsk a couple more times, if the exact same sectors and errors come up again, might be just corruption. If you get an increase in failed sectors each time you run it, the disc is failing; if so, never trust this disc with anything important again, even if it looks fine after a format. It'll just happen again.

Sorry about your data! How old is the laptop, and what brand is the disc?

Maybe I have failed to mention that hard disk is external one.   :D
However, the HDD is "SAMSUNG HD103SI USB Device" by "compmgmt.msc"
I have completed the chkdsk, and it shows no error.
Also, since it don't overheat than 44C, no 23 CRC error occurs.

the only harddrive that I had failed on me was my SSD drive. All my other drives never failed on me. I never keep a harddrive more then 3 years. Going to be replacing my 320GB and 750GB by the end of the summer with 2x2TB drives

External HD failed, kept giving I/O errors. 900GB of anime lost. "Repaired" the HD, redownloaded the 800GB of the 900GB of lost anime. After 2 weeks, the HD failed again. That's what I get for buying Seagate HDDs. Completely unusable hard disk after only 4 months. Compare this to a 2004-made WD caviar 80GB internal drive which is still working perfectly after having 5 years of continuous uptime and torrents seeding off it.
