Funny you should say that, I have a 7 disc on hand that I was going to do this on. Found out it's a bitch to figure out certain settings... so held back. Maybe I should upgrade to 7... no? (totally legit disc and everything, but considered doing it to another computer, but never did)

eh the upgrade for windows 7 makes it a pain in the balls since you will always have to install an OS before you install w7.

It's an OEM Disc for Win 7 Business. Cost a bit to grab... haven't used it... shame.

But yeah, you'd probably want to upgrade to 7 at some point anyway, as Vista is crap.

Just install win 7, there is no reason not to change to windows 7(if you have a key). You can complain about how its "different" but get over it and learn something new. Installing windows will prob write overwrite this "trojan" in your MBR. Windows 7 is great once you turn off half the crap they changed and get used to navigating various things in control panel. "God Mode" is good to set up your Win 7 just the way you like it. Also you can use windows 7 for 120 without a key and there are also ways around the authentication crap Microsoft have on Win 7.

I LOVE win7. The only reason I didn't upgrade earlier was during school and I had no time to reinstall everything etc. Plus, I liked having the option of a 4 hour battery life. I double checked and 7's settings gives me 2:15 maximum. But w/e. Time to move on and I have the time during summer to do the install etc. It's also time to move the WD BEKT out and roll the new BEJT. That, and it's time for the dual boot set up again.

For the record. An upgrade key CANNOT be used to activate a clean install. You must have a proper qualified pre-existing install there prior. Yes, it's retarded. Yes, I've tried a few times. I think that's what mgz was talking about.

At least, with your OEM disc you can install on more than one system... done it before with no problems.

You can do a clean install with the upgrade disc but it will not allow for you to activate the OS with that code. You can find another code to do w/e with and probably rebuild/repair your os/mbr with it, but you can't do a clean install and expect to activate it.

That's somewhat to be expected, I guess. But of course your disc can activate the clean install, so why not?

And the upgrade disc comes free for computers with Vista installed purchased past a certain date, right? So it makes sense that you can't use it to activate a clean install.

Not quite. Those computers come with a key that is pretty much either an OEM key or a normal key. Upgrades come with a key as well but it needs to be paired with another key to work. <_< stupid.

Upgrade key is fine if a corresponding legir vista or xp install is already there. No matter how old, it's fine.

(I worked at a computer refurbishing plant for a few months and decided to keep a list of old XP keys that were on the computers that we wiped, if you're wondering)

I have no idea on that one. I would assume no... but don't quote me on that. I would find it silly you could use an upgrade key more than once. That defeats the point of having a key.

Concur. Will be doing that tonight or near weekend. MBR Fixing failed. I'm still churning out GB upon GB of error reports.

Just gotta back up shit and then wipe it.

Do a nice full install of win7 ultimate. Screw this factory cd or what ever they gave you. If this new drive is big and you want to use it to store stuff with I'd do the OS install on the small HDD. Much easier to just reformat and install and not have to worry about backingup data. This is why I never save any of my files on the HDD that contains the OS.

Installing win 7 requires more time. Why? I will dual boot if I do so. Ubuntu/7 combo w/ Fat32 centre for shared files.

I haven't done it in a while though. I forget how to set up partitions. xD

Will have to look it up and have about 3+ hours to do this. (Mainly due to updates and stuff)
