Because thats the average American taste and people buy it because they like it?

Not really seeing the point in this. Just order from abroad? Nobody forces you to eat American chocolate

actually standards for chocolate in America arent the same as other countries, or something like that.. I read it a while back in an article about chocolate, I dont remember the details. Its in a magazine that is prolly buried under a ton of other shit right now.
In a bit, I will try to find a source so I can edit this post.

Standard food varies from country to country anyway. Its to be expected as different nationalities have different tastes. When I went to the States everything tasted sweeter to me and my family.

I think Hershey puts out some quality products. Nestle owns so many different "brands" (like Dove I think) who are also quality chocolate. I think it's mostly what you're used to, what's easily accessible, and THEN personal taste buds. If you grew up with American chocolate, given at every holiday, ever, you notice the differences (however small) foreign chocolates have.

I think other foods also play into this. How many Americans' favorite food is American style cusine? I know I prefer the various non-spicy Asian foods as well as Italian over meatloaf and mashed potatoes.

The most appreciated European chocolatiers have produced their chocolates since ≈1700 or so. They value tradition and their chocolate's taste was perfected during these hundreds of years. They know what they're doing. Best chocolate comes from Belgium, Switzerland, Holland, France and Poland. Almost all brands from these countries are excellent chocolates.

Just guessing, but you can probably blame this on the invention of milk chocolate, as well as differences in production standards for chocolate between the U.S. and other countries.

Ugh...I fucking hate that word "nougat" it just makes me nauseous.

Ontopic, though:
America can't be good at everything.
Same way that India isn't known for making cars, America isn't known for making chocolate. (believe me, India has some SHITTY cars.)

American Chocolate isn't bad, it just isn't the best.  It is still good though.

This summer i picked up some Swiss and Israeli chocolate, and they both were out of this world.

i think much like anything else you are primarily judging "american chocolate" as the mass produced varieties. Without question there is going to be small candy places that make ridiculously tasty chocolate. Just like there is anything else

Very true, there is a nice little local place in Key West, FL. that I hit up every summer when i'm down there.  They have ridiculously good fudge!

There's actually a chocolate shop by where I live and they have really amazing chocolate.

I think you're just comparing mass produced chocolate to hand-made higher quality products?

At the end of the day, don't it just feel good to have a mouthful of brown glory?

Depends what you're comparing. Hershey's stuff isn't too bad, but the type of chocolate isn't the same style as let's say... Cadbury's chocolate. High end stuff isn't the same as low end stuff.
This is your home now. So take advantage of everything here, except me.
