adding other public trackers
« on: August 09, 2010, 05:19:34 PM »
I have recently joined this wonderful site and after leeching for sometime i'm looking to seed many torrents but the usual problem is that there isn't much upload speed. I was wondering if it was allowed to add other site ( public ) trackers while leeching or seeding. my friend tried it once and he said if the same files were on other sites then the trackers will work and and you can download or upload along with using the bakabt tracker. my question is : first is it allowed to do so when u have downloaded while logged in ( i.e private tracker ) and second if its allowed will the upload i have done to other trackers improve my ratio. i'm asking this because there was rule on this site that said 'do not upload files downloaded while logged in to other trackers'. is this related or is it a different issue altogether and can someone explain the meaning of this rule.

Tracking is not done by ip so if you add other trackers your transfer will not be recorded.

I'm not sure to which rule you are referring; if you find it for us, perhaps we can explain it.

Adding another tracker shouldn't work anyway as the torrents have different hashes.

Downloading other files and then seeding them here is recommended practice in the "Fixing your Ratio" section in the Wiki.

Don't try to be lazy and just add BBT's tracker to the torrent you downloaded elsewhere. BBT torrents are special.

here is the link for the rules: http://wiki.bakabt.me/index.php/Rules

in it under the topic "Tracker Guidelines"

the rule states "Do not upload your private torrent files (.torrent files that you downloaded when logged in) to other trackers."

That is because the torrent file (not the videos that the torrent points to) that you downloaded when you were logged in has your private code that identifies you,
so if you upload that torrent file where someone can get it, then everytime those people download the torrent videos it will count as if it were your download, and give you a worse ratio.

Therefore when sharing a torrent file, only use torrent files that you downloaded when not logged in, or even much much better, share the link to the web page which has the torrent description instead.

Ratio wouldn't be the problem. The tracker wouldn't be able to confirm why "charminguy" downloaded the same torrent from at least two different positions and would autoban him.

I knew nothing of the outside world. I was just a frog in a well.

Ratio wouldn't be the problem. The tracker wouldn't be able to confirm why "charminguy" downloaded the same torrent from at least two different positions and would autoban him.

Only if more than one person happens to have the torrent active at any one time, that is... IIRC the tracker wouldn't care if you downloaded the file 50 times in 50 different locations, if none of the 50 instances happened concurrently with another. At least, it shouldn't, in case you decide to torrent on your laptop at wifi hotspots.

the rule states "Do not upload your private torrent files (.torrent files that you downloaded when logged in) to other trackers."

Not sure how you interpreted that, but it has a completely different meaning than what you are apparently describing...

Actually, I'll take another stab at interpreting your original question from a different angle. If I understand correctly, you want to:
1. Download a .torrent file from BBT.
2. Download all the files on it and save them.
3. Upload a .torrent file to a public tracker and seed them there, and improve your ratio that way.

If this is what you meant, yes, you can do this. However, if you were to upload the .torrent file you got from BBT (while logged in, that requires extra stress) to a public site, you will end up with people using your key to download and therefore causing your download stat to jump, and in turn causing your ratio to plummet.

Now, it is more or less a stab in the dark to use this to try to improve your ratio. If you log out before downloading the .torrent file, the file you will get is public instead of private, and thus does not contain your private key. This file you are allowed to upload to a public tracker site in an attempt to fish for more leechers.

Most people would do the converse of that procedure to improve their ratios though. I suspect your friend misunderstood you and thought you meant to download the files from other sites and seed them on BBT. Which is, as I said before, recommended practice.

Now, if you simply meant you want to add another tracker to the .torrent you have open in your client, you shouldn't do that. And yes, the rule you mentioned is unrelated if this is what you meant. This is how I initially interpreted your question, and seemingly everyone else here too.

You want to tell me that on the vast internet all the leechers behave themselves and leech it one at a time ::)

Yes this is what I meant to add other trackers to my .torrent file. You said I shouldn't do that, which means its not allowed. In any case I want to know what happens if someone does that.

You're missing the point, it's not that it's not allowed but that you will not gain anything from it...
Any extra upload you make will not be tracked by us if you add other trackers to your torrent file.

Not too sure the tracker is always too quick to notice these... Some weeks back I pm'd a guy that he should change his key because torrents with it were spammed on nyaa (probably himself who posted them there though...). And little research showed the same thing had happened roughly a month earlier as well, so I doubt it was noticed the first time around at least...

Might happen by chance, you never know. Maybe it's not popular. :P
