250GB Bandwidth by Comcast
« on: August 10, 2010, 12:50:06 AM »
Anyone here ever gone over that cap and get a call from Comcast? supposedly I went over 1700GB last month.  :P

And what are your opinions on bandwidth limitations set by ISPs?

You'd be surprised. AT&T has a 120GB cap.

The only cap which i have experienced was with my iphone HSDPA connection.

I got 10GB per month, and if i go past that then ill only have 128kbps edge.

Once i streamed like three entire anime series, and that was the only time i went past that.

I upload that in ≈8 hours. Just curious, how much does it cost? It has to be cheap, no?
The only bandwidth restrictions that actually make sense somewhat to me are on 3G/EDGE connections or when using data tethering from one.

Here is what you do because I got a call when I did 3TB in a month. Get business class from comcast. Its completely different company but uses the comcast name and network. It cost more to have but if you use the internet as much as I do then its worth the price

Well I would need to pay 100$ instead of the current 60$ just to match the same speeds, but if it means that I can constantly download and seed, i'm in  ;D

yeah.   you have two choices either get a business acct, verizon fios/dsl or keep your use under 250gb.
if you go over again they will disconnect you for year.

may i ask how you used 1.7tb in a month?   i ran into some trouble last year when i used 750gb.

There are still ISPs that limit bandwidth?
Australia they are only just bringing in plans with unlimited bandwidth and even then they cost a fortune. At the moment I have unlimited midnight to midday and unlimited uploads all day. Between midday and midnight I only have 45GB though and its a crappy speed all day. Maximum download speed is like 150kBps and upload is like 30kBps. That is for $60AUD a month ($55USD).

I would love if ISPs gave up their limits but when you say limits you talk in TBs or hundreds of GBs. I talk in double digit GBs so there is alittle difference there. :P

Shit? And I thought my ISP was exorbitant with the pricing.

I use brighthouse (Re-Seller of roadrunner & Cable company here) Since they service our TV & Phone I think the internet was added on for $25 more a month for a 11Mb line, though they gave us some really chunky AMBIT modem/router which kills the speeds because speedtest only does around 9.80. My grandparents have comcast, and they said theyve had alot of issues *theyre in miami* like connection drop-outs. They also have phone & tv service through comcast, and last time i was there the connection actually died for 3 days after a light storm.

My ISP also provides tv and phone services along with internet. I have a 100mbit/s down and 80mbit/s up (full duplex) connection without bandwitdh limitations and all these cost me about 14-15$/month. It sure is nice living in a semi-underdeveloped country :D

My ISP Rogers has a 60GB cap... Man they are fags.

Before I moved to where I am now I had a cap of 90GB. Since the first month I've passed my cap, the best I've done was a couple of months of being 1TB over the cap. They never called me... they liked my money to much.

My connection (30Mbps down, 1Mbps up) used to have a limit of 40Gbytes/month (mixed up and down).
Fortunately they had "Happy Hours", from 1 to 9 (AM) traffic wasn't counted, which was great, since theoretically - with 30Mbps - you could use ~3Tb in one month, I know I always used around 200-300Gbytes/month.
Then came the "unlimited" and sooner or later people found out that "unlimited" meant 250Gbytes/month, you exceed that and they will:
  • Send you a registered letter that tells you to stop using so much traffic or they "might" cut your connection if they think you're abusing.
  • Phone you once in a while, saying the same as the letter.

Now, I personally would have nothing against it, if they defined what is an "abusive" amount of traffic. The problem is that they don't define it, refuse to define it and yet expect people to follow the rules. People only know the "unlimited" is 250Gbytes/month because lots of people (mostly P2P users) started receiving the letters/calls when they hit the 250Gbytes.

I understand unlimited is impossible, I even think that every ISP should have a traffic limit, that way at least people would know what to expect. But then I'm against any limit under 500 Gbytes for connections over 10Mbps. That and up speed should be at least 1/10th of the down speed, eg. 30 down/1 up is simply ridiculous.

I have the 50Mbps down 15Mbps up business class connection from comcast. It only cost me $70 a month because I know people within the company. It would cost a normal person $180 a month for the same speed.

Not sure I could handle a cap after having time warner.

$64 a month, no caps. And me and my roommate download a shitload of crap.

Only drawback is upload speed. But I still manage to hold above a 1.0+ ratio here, and other places

I'm against any limits. Only reason there are limits is because ISP are greedy.
My ISP charges up to 50$ extra is you pass the cap. Since I've been with them I've always payed the 50$ because I've always passed their shitty cap.
Even worst is that they lowered their caps because nettflix or w/e it's called is opening a site for my country. Now if that does not scream abuse/greed not sure what does.
