Cosplay suggestion
« on: August 14, 2010, 04:25:05 AM »
Hi!

It's been a while since I've been here :P. Lately I wanted to do a new cosplay. The last one (and only) I did was Shizuma (from Strawberry Panic). Too bad the team I was in disbanded and a few of us only used the cosplay a couple of times on our own. It was nice though. At one point we were quite a lot, all main characters were covered. It's very hard to coordinate a group of people when everyone is busy with other things xD

Anyway, I want something... cute :D. I've been thinking in this:

I find it really nice ^^. I know, it's no anime character or anything, just a random girl from Shimotsuki Haruka's albums (I didn't find her name anywhere). But I always look cosplays for the clothes more than the characters. So, any other suggestions? Something nice, cute and... girly. Like the one above. If possible no typical or overdone cosplays, like regular school uniforms and such. But not overly complicated or weird either. "Normal" clothes, dresses or whatever that can be found in a "real life" environment xD. I mean no space suits, magical girl outfits or things like that. I hope I made myself understandable :)

I also liked the dresses from Kalafina's Seventh Heaven album and the outfits from Hikari no Senritsu single.

I was also thinking of singing something along with the cosplay... for example from Kalafina: Red Moon, Serenato, Hikari no Senritsu, Fantasia, Fairytale, hell, the whole Kalafina's albums ;D, I love those songs. I have a lot from many others too. I still don't like my voice much... but I think I'm not THAT bad, lol. I've seen people in the stage reading from a paper with the lyrics xD, pretty bad pronunciations and even people singing the dubbed versions of the songs. Horrible (I'm not saying I'm perfect, not even close either :P)

But first the cosplay, hehe. Any ideas are welcome :-*

Truthfully? Make one yourself.

Grab a guide online, and start making basic things like capes etc. (I seriously made a full sized cape for less than 10 dollars, but it did use up quite a bit of time since I had no sewing machine)

Paper mache does wonders for making masks, or even accessories. But again, uses up a bit of time (drying and cleaning excess stuff)

Paints will probably cost the most, but it'll decrease if you use often on different projects.

Or, make the cape and procure the rest of the stuff via mix and match etc.

And seriously. Spend something on some shoes. No one needs to see you in a skirt and stockings paired with sandals again.

Why don't you get yourself a kara'kesh and cosplay as a Goa'uld? Easiest costume ever.  :P

Just realized there were 2 sets of pics.

The latter is known as "Mori Girl" style. You're not going to find that in a store in the most literal sense. It requires self modification and it also requires quite a bit of vintage 70s clothing.

Check the fashion thread in the recommendation section and watch the series I suggested to Kuran.

Myself? Yeah, that would be nice. But I don't have time and I barely know how to sew :(. I also can't do almost anything at home (issues with parents). Some day, when I'm alone and in peace, I'll buy a sewing machine, take one of those short courses on how to sew, cut cloths, make molds, etc, and do everything myself :D

For now... I'm a bit into the *business* of selling hardware and building PCs (here those things are quite expensive compared to the US, Europe or any "decent" country). I haven't asked for prices on the costume yet, but the Shizuma one was *really* cheap (although it wasn't too complicated and the details were a bit rough). But even if the price quadruplicates that, the job of buying hardware, assembling the PC and installing Windows, makes me enough money to cover it. For me, making a cosplay with my almost non-existence knowledge and sewing by hand would take me days of "real" work. Building a PC takes me a only few hours, with almost no real "work" (basically ordering parts, putting everything together, wait for Windows to finish installing and install some random programs).

I know, one of the essences of cosplays is to do them yourself but, given my very little time between Uni, Jap course and work, my hard situation at home and the money I get for doing something that's trivial for me, makes having someone to the the costume the best choice :D (I could go on with details but it would be for a TL;DR :-\)

And yes I'll also get some nice shoes of my non girly size :P to go with the costume :3. I want everything to look good  :-*

Edit: I'll look for the things you suggested me later, I must go to sleep now, I only have a few hours left of sleep y.y

Dude. All you need to do is surf garage sales, thrift stores and the like and find the right stuff. The ONLY thing you can't really buy properly is a cape. (At least cheaply) and that's what I suggested you make.

Try doing this one:

http://diyfashion.about.com/od/costumes/ig/How-To-Harry-Potter-Costumes/Death-Eater-Costume.htm

At least it's somewhat manly and you'll learn the basics of making a cape. Sew by hand. That's what I did.

Well, with the exception of the bustier/vest, all the items for that cosplay could be easily bought. Most of it, probably second hand. The only think I can imagine would be hard to find in nice condition would be the petticoat, since I imagine you'd only be able to find square-dancing ones, and that one if more of... a simple, 50's style. You'd just need to buy:

Long sleeve shirt
some ribbon with the preferred design on it (some come with an adhesive on the back so all you have to do is iron it on)
a beret
a plain, cream colored skirt with pinstripes in it (probably around this time of year is best since back to school sales and all)

The cape, you could always try to use a Halloween one, but that would run the risk of not being accurate in shape, or looking really terrible.

It's a simple enough cosplay, and the only piece I can imagine you would need to really hunt for/alter yourself/get custom made is that top.

Good luck~
