Newbie asking for Clarification

(1/1)

Foolness:
Hi, I'm new to uploading torrents in general (although I did succeed in uploading something to a public torrent once but I forgot the steps)

This isn't a question about.

Rather, I wanted to clarify some of the few things that's been said here and there especially in the FAQ section.

No offers except for power users

From the few topics I read, I pretty much hear Free Leech = increase your ratio even if you have no files. Does this also translate to: only way to upload files (i.e. offer) is to follow this method first because there is absolutely no way to offer files otherwise?

I do try to keep my ratio positive in general (although I don't follow the 1:1 rule, as much as I look at the seeds and how much I liked the files afterwards) but seeing as it's possible to get banned permanently from BakaBT I just want to make sure this is absolutely the best monetarily free path to keeping a good ratio seeing as I'm more of a find and seed torrent consumer in general rather than a random torrent downloader and don't usually download random files just to keep a good ratio. (Part of the reason why I tend to stay away from private trackers. Also I have a moderate/slow upload connection and I don't know how to prioritize seed queues in Deluge other than keeping 1 seed running which usually keeps me from maintaining a good ratio. )

Templates/Details

I absolutely have no idea how to work with CSS so when I read this part of the manual, I thought I'd ask here first whether this only includes visual elements such as screenshots or it's a case where I absolutely have to know CSS or I can't put up offers at all even after becoming a power user.

Also from the Faqs, it seems like scanlator details are really important. I do have an account in MAL and I have a basic set of links of where to go and find the details (ANN, MAL, MangaUpdates) but is it absolutely necessary to narrow down the exact scanlated copy to the exact scanlator? Scanlator searches are something I haven't figure'd out yet.

FreeLeech

What's the amount of free leech downloading/seeding per day do users here find optimal to allow for a good ratio boost?

I'm not a heavy downloader and I'm not sure if it's my router setting (I don't have a static ip but I have the necessary ports opened), bittorrent client or other problems but I find there's a huge difference between the data I have and the data on BakaBT.

Example:

As of my typing, this free leech torrent has 72 seeds and 73 peers.

Download speed wise I don't notice a speed decrease and in fact it finished downloading in less than 30 min. but peer wise, the data I get is 73 seeds, 1 (1) peers and upload speed jumps from 8.4 KiB/s to none. Same with another Free Leech torrent I recently downloaded.

Freeleech torrents are torrents <= 100 MB, music videos, artbooks and 1080p anime. Those torrents have no negative influence on your ratio, i.e. their download is not tracked but the amount to upload (seed) of these torrents is recorded and added to your ratio (only improving it). Of course, with the prerequisite that you have leechers. Without leechers it's logical that you can't upload any data.

You can't be banned, only warned. Warned = no download possible but upload (to improve your ratio to remove the warning).

You don't have to know CSS. The templates are there for those who don't know how to make descriptions. You just have to fill out the template with the necessary information.

Best thing you take a look at the wiki as well.

I seed everything to 1.0 ratio (freeleech or not). Simple way to keep your overall ratio decent.

Thanks. That's a relief. I thought the warning was a prelude to banning. Should have checked out the definition more.

I find this to be counter-intuitive in practice so I just don't do it. Maybe if I have a terabyte HD and a fast upload speed but from my experience, I find that it's better to seed beyond 1.0 the under-seeded torrents I like than to keep an even ratio because I find most files that can be 1:1'd are often the same files where there are enough cumulative seeders to not hurt the speed much (except for those picky users with ultra fast download connections) and all the ratio is feel good and still won't magnetize people to torrents with 1-5 seeds where the smallest of download boost can help increase the chance of a new seed.

Uploading on a torrent is different from uploading a .torrent; we normally use the terms "seeding" and "offering", respectively, to avoid confusion.  Seeding is a normal part of bittorrent, and happens automatically when you download a .torrent.  Offering a .torrent, on the other hand, requires you to have obtained files from another source, make a description, respond to comments, etc., and is not usually directly responsible for an increase in your ratio.

Aside from that, you no longer need a ratio of 1.0 to become a Power User.
