Any idea about what the real problem is?
« on: August 24, 2010, 07:05:25 AM »
OK, so my DVD driver works just fine. But today when I inserted a DVD, it couldn't detect anything; even no messages like "Please insert a disc'' or anything like that. I did it again and again but no difference! Then I tested with other DVDs and they all were detected and played finely. Is there any problem with my DVD or my driver? I restarted my pc and tried again but no help.

Please help this poor buddy over here. :(

I bought it but I'm sure it's pirated (most of the DVD/CDs are pirated here in South Asia).

What if it's a burned DVD?

The real problem is the end user.

problem with reading the disk ID track most likely, this is the area closes to the center.  Dirt, scratch, age fade.

Dirt on the laser-lens pickup.

Could be DRM, too. It once prevented my computer from even realizing there was a DVD in the drive. I ended up having to make an image file of it on another computer and copying it over in order to use it.

Uh but it's not damaged or anything, it's new. I should check if it works in another pc. Thanks for your help anyway.

If you got it in Asia, chances are it won't work in any old DVD player. I'm not sure why, but I remember we needed a second DVD player for certain discs.

Is it a burned DVD?

Odd question... Any DVD with data written to it is a "burned" DVD.

No. DVD-ROMs are stamped. Recordable discs are not stamped, that's why your writer's laser burns the dye to simulate pits in the disc

Burned discs have variances in the diameter of the pits which may or not be read properly by your drive.

Just stick it in another device and see if it plays.

I've had a similar problem.

CD and DVDs I've used before were suddenly having problems being read. More specifically rewritable DVDs.

What fixed it? I don't know, suddenly they just started to work again. Anything else was working though.

Had a similar problem too, disks that I've burned were not recognized but the disks themselves were written correctly. Disabling AHCI in the BIOS for the DVD-writers fixed this, though this will also lead to reinstalling Windows probably.

Oh, I thought the writer burned pits into the disc, heh... Thanks for the info.
