Author Topic: Moving Files make Windows7 slow like turtle (Read 2997 times)

Hey,

I have this problem from long time now, i was searching for a way to solve this but nothing came a cross.

I'm moving files from disk to disk, I can't even browse net with firefox, i get "application not responding" like w7 would be only take care of moving and any thing other is not important.
I'ts quite hard to work on pc when i need to move a large pile of files.

I remamber there was similar problem when DMA was turn off (on XP for example) but i check, and all the disks got DMA turn on, and work in ULTRA DMA 5 O_o
I install all drivers for chipsets for my mobo which is ga-p31-ds3l
dvd + hdd 1 is on channel 0
and hdd is on channel 1
mayby thats the problem

Any advice on my problem ?

Memory usage? What shows up on task manager when this occurs?

Any chance of SMART info from the HDD to know if it's on its way out?

what kinds of files are you moving? Chances are your antivirus is scanning the files.

Why are you using IDE and not SATA? If you have to use IDE never put the optical drive on the same cable as the HDDs.

Ha. Ha. Wow. No wonder. Maybe the last ditch advice "get a new computer" really applies in this case.

Anyway, the guy has his HDDs on separate IDEs. I don't think it should be a problem. Performance may increase a bit if "HDD 1" is the master though.

fohfoh, Memory usage - nothing strange occurs
SMART is all ok

Lupin , No matter what i move its allways same - *.zip, *.mkv. I will try to disable my av.

Proin Drakenzol, dvd is ata (not sure why its in channel 0 O.o its not sata O.o) yeah i know its old, but why replace something that work 6 years !? O_o
For dvd im using ata, for hdd's im using sata (3 hdd's) i posted the "channel" thing from sys preference

was thinking thats the problem... but its not ?!

I'd probably get a new SATA drive and clone the IDE drive onto it if that's where your installation of Windows is. Seeing your problems, that is likely the case, whether or not the HDD is master.

There's no need for a SATA optical drive, so don't worry about that. An IDE drive can handle the max speed any DVD out there can run at, anyway. So changing to the setup with an IDE optical drive and two SATA HDDs should improve performance. Whether or not it's enough to handle your OS... we'll see.

if you reffering IDE as PATA, then I need to say:
I only use dvd as IDE, all 3 disks are SATA

I see its my fault i gave a missinfo here.
To be clear.

3 hdds are SATA with DMA turn on, dvd is PATA

I tried the "turn a-v off" and it help a bit

Im using Nod32 + M$ Essentials, before it was giving me more freeze than the moving issue, but now its ok (I find something that one of them dont see "potential virus" when the second dose)

Hmmm... im thinking my main problem is that i like to simultaniose move those file like: from C > D, form E > D, and from F > C. So the hardware is limited here, not the connection between mobo and hdd.

I'm I right ?!

If so, is there any app that make moving files in some kind of list, so i can make "move" in queue so i wont need to pause/start it like i currently do in TotalCommander?

If you have SATA Disks try to enable AHCI in windows 7 first and then in your bios.
Also you should configure your HDD like this

I didnt have a clue that i was paying for good hdd's and couldnt get full of there features ;/

But thats wont be the reason to change my mobo just cuz of that.

Turning off windows write-cache buffer is good idea, and i got UPS too, but I rather want to be safe than sorry

I was thinking about it but naa.
I think my main problem is that i want to move all at once, I need to focuse on doing things one by one, am i right ?

I was thinking, and the cheapest way is to buy SATA controller. I google a little and they are supporting ahci :O
Will that be ok ?! will I noticed the boost from ahci ?

AHCI won't give you a miracle boost. It's more handy, if you wanna hotswap a HDD without shutting down your PC; like you would do with USB.

But could you post a picture of that?

To see what exactly what your moving speed is. Best to do it with a big file.

Its on beginning 120MB/s
then its 95MB/s
Avg its 95~MB/s
and the end its ~85MB/s

From 1 hdd to another hdd.

Currently I can't test all ways because i lack in disk space

waiting for new hdd.

So you telling my that buying SATA Controler for PCI-E x1 wont give me boost much? But thanks to that the NCQ feature will work. From what i readed all my SATA II disks work in IDE emulation mode... Don't mention it my mobo support SATA, not SATA II O_o
So buying SATA Controller for PCI-E x1 would enable SATA II support in my PC, won't that boost it a little ?

Well ~85MB/s is a really good transfer rate for SATA 1. The average transfer rate for SATA 2 is 80-120MB/s.
But well I'm not really sure that you'll get a better transfer rate with a SATA 2 PCI card, because everything passes through the mainboard. Best would be to buy a new mainboard, but I assume that this also would mean buying a complete new PC.

yeah - I know, this pc is ok, i can play in sc2 and other new games still on medium-high details

and thats fine for me. I was just trying to boost hdd transfer a little, but if you say there wont be a big boost and it wont help hdds to live longer thanks to SATA II enabling then i will pass here, and wait 1-2 year to change this pc
