I find them boring as hell...

But that's my personal opinion of course.

To be honest I've never really played a VN fully. I've always skipped to the delicious bits.

Example:

Click click click, oh god comeon MOVE! skip skip, ( Disable male lead voice ). Oh yeeeees delicious CGs

But due to my magical speed reading powers I always somehow get the gist of the storyline.

Yeah, I played VN's before, lots of them.
Currently waiting warmly for Cartagra, should be anytime soon, and finishing few things that I started earlier I have left over.
Nice steady progress on Katahane, by the way - keep up the good work.

I played fate/stay night and it is awesome, though it took me 3 tries because I couldn't bring myself to read it in one go.

I played my first VN about 6 or 7 years ago (might have been a bit earlier). I probably play 1 or 2 per year. I find that I mostly prefer a normal book and just grab the VN that seem to be better than the books I want to read. Oh and if I loved an anime I tend to pick up the VN as well in order to get a fuller experience of something I liked. (Majority of the ones I play are erotic since that is a + for me, just as it is a plus in normal literature.)

The one I've liked the most thus far was Kana ~imouto~, it just clicked with me and I cried several times while playing through different paths.

Do you include animated ones such as School Days in this category as well? Since most people tend to include it in the VN category. Games of that kind I could probably play quite a few off.

I have read a good bit of them (though only the ones translated to English...) and my avatar/waifu comes from one too.  (From Cross Channel)

I've played Saya no Uta, Shuffle, and Chaos; Head, and Ef: A Tale of Two.  I really want to play Eden*,but the translators are arranging something with Minori, hopefully getting an international release.

I can handle the tentacles. But cannibalism is a NO for me. Guess I'll skip on that one. The very thought of eating a fellow human almost makes me puke.

Saya no Uta isn't that bad, unless you're a little whiny girl, but then again I'm pretty desentized, as watching "A Serbian Film" didn't even bother me one bit.  The cannibalism parts you hardly saw anything.  It just described it as being a "green goo", and showed the aftermath from another person's point of view.  The gore is nothing compared to other hardcore eroges like Screaming Gore Show or Gun Katana.

Back in the day, I thought Visual Novels, and H games were the same thing, so I bought a VN hoping (like a sucker) that I'd get to see some silly H scenes. So wrong...

It was boring, and despite multiple people telling me to give them another go, I can't play more than 5 minutes.

Thanks for the response.

For the people who would like to check out some more translated stuff, go to this page, http://translationlibrary.blicky.net/ff/ff_visualnovels_01.htm
Look for the name of a game you would be interested in. If you want to find out more about that game, copy and paste the name into www.vndb.org

Once you've got something you want to play, search for the game on Hongfire.com (use google). I can almost guarantee it will 100% be there. Lastly, support the developers!

Some kind fellow will probably make a voice patch, though.  From what I've heard, it's pretty easy to do for the demo, so unless they change something majorly to make it harder it'll probably pop up soon after release.

It's a lot less than the cost of the japanese version.

Those who say visual novels are boring should maybe try some titles with more explosions and action instead of slice of life moege.

+1 Sengoku Rance - if you have ever enjoyed a turn based game and can stand a bit of H then this is a great game.
Utawarerumono, I read somewhere that they have given this voices now, I started to play it but it seemed to be following the anime exactly which I had just watched so I quit.

If you liked Sengoku Rance, the Big Bang Age translation just finished (I think they still need to do a few images, but all the text is translated) and has a somewhat similar feel to it.
