new HDD with error in SMART
« on: September 17, 2010, 06:39:58 AM »
Hey,

Like I said I did, I bought new HDD (i got 3 same models)
Its Samsung HD103SJ 1TB, but this one got:
(C8) Write Error Rate with value of 1.
I didn't copy anything on it, i just formated it to ntfs.
The price of send it back and get a new is 1/10 price of new hdd.
My othere 3 Hdd (2 hdd are 103sj) have C8 at 0.

Should I replace it, or will the c8 will just be on 1 for all use?

I suggest you test the drive using Hitachi's DFT. If it passes, it's fine.

Samsung..... ahh.

Please, dont ahh, i got 4 samsungs hdd and all 3 are super fine, no errors, its been 3years for first hdd, 2 years for second, 1 year for third and 1 day for forth :)

Im very happy with samsung hdd's. And im assuming that the problem is based on sh**y mail. They send it in "not safe" way. So that could help hdd to "error" me in smart.

Lupin, i used the newest hitachu DFT in Advanced Test (took alot of time ~4h) and no problem found. About SMART i know + - what those C8 means but its my first hdd with anything over 0, so I wanted to be sure it is/or isn't problem.

vuzedome, you could make a better post - like c8 is/isn't critical. or "if mhdd dont see problem dont make it up".

Anyway, i will mhdd it once too - the surface test + r/w test. If the c8 atribiut wont go up, i think it will be ok? or should I resend it back? or give it to samsung service?

The C8 being higher than 0 (in this case 1) does not necessarily denote hard disk failure. It's not a critical attribute. Try filling the disk with data and then performing a full format and repeat these 2 steps once or twice, if C8 increases, send the disk back.

filling it up with random staffs ? like 1gb txt files ?:P to i can creat them in few sec, or copy real files there?

I used mhdd without any problems, with results:
7652348 <3ms
8157 <10ms
370 <50ms
no errors found.

Fill it with whatever you want, just that keep a backup copy of the data elsewhere, because you are testing to see if this hard drive is good or bad. You wouldn't like losing your data in case it was bad.

Then do an "erase" on mhdd, format and fill the drive again. Look to see if that attribute got worse, also look at "reallocated sector count" - it should be zero on a new drive and not increase after you filled the drive up.

I didnt read that I could fill it up with fake data, so it took me 3~4h to fill it up with anime (copying it not moving)
Now im formating it (not quick format) via W7.

The reallocated sector count is 0, so its ok there.
Mayby the error write was at testing stage - like turn off before finishing writing ? why i think that? cuz there was the atribute start/stop spin, at 2 when i first turn it on, so it was once before checked ?! not sure, but if someone used it before i wont think he would make RAW format on it and use it in only ONE spin ;)

deathman, im not sure if they will replace it only because of "write error rate at 1"

You should do "erase" on mhdd, then scan. Formatting a hard drive in Windows does not cause all sectors to be written, just where the file system structures are.

0. i checked SMART
1. i scanned the hdd with mhdd
2. i filled up hdd with data
3. i formated it with windows format tool
4. i filled up hdd with data (new one - other than before)
5. i formated it using ERASE function in mhdd
6. i compare new SMART with old SMART, no diffrence in ERROR atributes
7. i'm assuming that HDD is safe to store data ?

Can someone confirm that ?:) (just to be safe ;P)

It should be. That one write error probably was some random event.

I'd say it should be pretty safe, if you're going to use it only for storage and not for intensive work, especially not intensive writing (reading should be OK).

That one write error probably was some random event.
That's my guess also.

I will fill it up to 3/4 of space with stuffs, and the 1/4 will be for torrent use.
My current torrent disk got 1 Error Write Rate too, but he got 1 from g-sense error rate so i see what made that "1" in Error Write.

So I'm safe. And if hdd will fail (but it wont) i will have warranty (for 3 years) so making it torrent disk would give benefits in making the "real" test for it.

But in the end it should be all right like the 3 hdd's ;), btw I just updated firmware in TV, and not shuttering in 1080p movies via usb ;)

Any one know is there a way to update firmware in samsung hdds ? because the newest one got older fw than the both older hdds (same model)
