Seeded downloads not starting, have tried 3 different clients
« on: September 18, 2010, 05:38:02 AM »
I started up some torrents and tried downloading them.  They were all shown to have seeds, but the downloading never started- it just sat there.  I looked in the wiki and saw that my default client, BitComet, wasn't supported, so I looked at the whitelisted clients and tried uTorrent.  Still nothing.  I then went and downloaded the original BitTorrent client, making sure the version number was one of those approved.  Still nothing.

My connection does not have any sort of firewalls or anything and I'm stumped.  Any ideas?

if i read it right you are trying to download some stuff that people are seeding but its not starting, in utorrent click on the trackers tab to see if they're working, if not you can click to update the tracker and see if starts working, if it starts but still don't download you can also try to force start the download, right-click the torrent and click force start, dunno if this helps or not

Deliver me from my restriction, my restraint, my state of mind

It won't let me update the tracker for some reason.  Force Start doesn't work either.

I'm not getting any error messages either, unless there's a specific part of the software to find those I'm not aware of.

Huh? DHT, Local Peer Discovery and Peer Exchange are active?

Did you tinker with the original .torrent file downloaded from here?

Yeah.  Should they be?

The only tinkering with the .torrent files I did was deselect some of the audio files I didn't want when the file was first opened.  Other than that it's untampered.

I don't think so. I am seeding and mine says "not allowed".

you should check both your client and the torrent file if they are untampered with. it should definitely list DHT, Local Peer Discovery and Peer Exchange as not allowed.
it is to assume that the reason for you not being able to download is the same as what is causing that.

Turned them all off, still not working.  Here's a look at my general uTorrent settings:

Is there anything else here I should change?

turning them off is not the issue. the issue is that you are even ABLE to turn them ON on that specific bakabt torrent. that means that you either
- modified the torrent file or
- modified your client
to ignore the private flag of a torrent. i just can't think of another explanation.

The only things I changed were the directory I wanted to save them to and un-checking some files I didn't want.  Would that screw things up?

No, that shouldn't screw things up. Have you tried redownloading the .TORRENT file?

Oh wow, that did it!  The problem must have been that I just copy-pasted the tracker URLs into the others from BitComet instead of opening the original torrent file with them.  Thanks.

... What?

Pro tip: Never use BitComet. Or anything related to it, like BitLord.
