...have fun picking up sticks for an hour or more before you mow each week.
Why would I mow in the woods? What I meant was have a yard but not like a huge one and the rest of my property just be woods.

When branches fall from trees there's this mystical wonderful thing called "the wind" and this mysterious force of nature, unfortunately, transports these sticks and twigs despite the natural forces of gravity, all over your fucking yard.

True story.

It doesn't really bother me, but most smaller stuff I just normally run over. Now like bigger things I would just pick up, I'm not really afraid of yard work.... :-\

The thing is, they can break your lawnmowers. So I don't know what you're mowing with, but I guess if it's heavy duty enough to do that then I guess you're fine but if you have like a normal riding lawnmower then it's probably going to be a problem.

When my "smart"-phone lags so fucking hard for absolutely no reason.
Also when people cannot drive correctly despite it being INCREDIBLY EASY.

What size branches do your trees drop Tiff? I would be scared to walk on your yard.  :o
I've never bothered to pick up anything that's less than 4cm in diameter and I've never broken a lawn mower. Even the the regular 1hp two strokes.

Concerning Tiff's underground palace last page, you'd need a heavy duty air treatment/conditioning/heating units. Those aren't exactly cheap. They also need a shitload of energy to run. You'd either be burning a lot of fuel or have skyhigh electricity bill.
Depending on the place that's built you might be able to make use of geothermal energy for running your place but a place that size it would be somewhere between 50-100k extra cost.

There would also be the issue of moisture dripping through the walls that might make your pretty white walls turn grey rather soon. You'd have to have moisture seals aside from just using concrete walls. But basically you'd need to dig a hole almost twice the size of the end result because you would want to have it surrounded by better soil instead of whatever random stuff you're building on.

Not quite - http://www.tornadoproofhouses.com/indoor-air.php

Can't comment about the walls.

Those are the normal air circulation units that every house(at least here) has. The thing is that it isn't enough for an underground palace if you want fresh, not just breathable air. It just circulates new air from the surface to the house. Aside from a basic filter there's nothing to ensure that it's somewhat dry and somewhat warm. My experience is that devices like that are not enough if you want actually fresh feeling air, much less underground.
Another thing is that it needs to regulate the moisture in the air. Depending on your area, it might be very dry or, more likely, very moist underground.

The walls and the need for insulation depends on the ground you're building it on. Sand hill wouldn't need anything but a thin moisture seal while a valley with a lot of fertile soil would be a nightmare.

I'm no engineer in the area though.

Why the fuck can't they fix the wifi here at the uni? It's saturday and it's fucking overloaded again. WTF?

Because we can!

Either way, it's pointless to even have a conversation about that now since if (when) I build something like that I'd obviously have to consult with some architects and such first to have everything professionally done and they'd take care of all that stuff at that time. So it's not really something I need to consider in the conceptualizing myself.

If it's just 1 story underground I'm not sure why all of what you're talking about would be all that necessary though. There are tons of buildings and houses that have stories underground that I presume don't have to have some complex expensive thing like that. I imagine it'd be moreso for deeper things like an entire underground silo or some such. Just one level underground though? I don't know about that. Then again, I'm no engineer.

True that.

Yeah, a lot of houses here have one basement floor too. But they're usually small and only house a sauna and bathroom or a storage or something. Still, the air in there is different unless they have an open access  the main floor. For a larger space the rules change somewhat I'm sure.
The quality of the air has more to do with the level being sealed unlike overground levels which have constant airflow through the windows, doors, the roof and the walls. The moisture control need comes from the underground. So if you didn't want your underground level sealed off from the main level I think you wouldn't need any extra air machinery(aside from having a larger house, duh).

Because we can!

Well yeah, if you see on the images the ground level and underground levels have a pretty big hallway with a grand staircase connecting them so it's not as if it's sealed at all.

wouldn't you worry about underground flooding? its pretty bad when the area of the space gets big.
its either water proof everything from top to bottom and have all entryway water-tight, or use lots of pumps.

as for the power source, try digging down 10meters deep and put some of this underground and cover it up.
then connect it to a heat-exchanger that dumps the heat into a generator(like a Stirling engine or similar).

I thought the point was that the invading army would not know it was there? It kinda needs to be sealed, no?

No, there were two separate points. Mine began thusly: "Though personally, if I was doing a new home I'd do it like so:"

its due to the fact that theres patents on those names, not to mention getting sued is the least of their worries.

You mean trademarks, not patents. Patents are a completely different thing.

It's still fucking stupid though. Can't they standardize the name of this feature?
