In other news, some asshole ran over my cousin's dog. Not even an accident, they swerved off the road intentionally to kill it.

I don't know.... it's sadistic, but I think serial killers are more like hunters. This kind of killing, it's just a wonton disregard for life. It's barbaric, like... well, like an uneducated uncivilized people. I'd classify the Islamic extremists similarly though I wouldn't call them serial killers either.
I think that it's sadism and the knowledge that killing an animal will result in no punishment while they couldn't get away with killing a person; sadism coupled with a lack of value for non-human life, the latter of which I can understand I suppose and it makes sense how the two combined could result in such a thing.
It's also incredibly stupid. It was a large full sized dog, a pit bull. So, it's not like it was a chihuahua or something. An animal of that size could cause considerable damage to one's vehicle.
I'm not touched by it or anything, it's just incredibly stupid that someone would go out of their way to hit something with their vehicle, which would surely cause damage to their vehicle. Sure it's sadistic, but you'd think it'd be easy enough to go hunting. Hmm... yes, that must be it. Perhaps the sadism spreads beyond simply beyond killing the animal itself but the expected grief their owners would be projected to feel as well. That makes sense.
Hm... Well, I think I understand now. I must say, it's a rather sick condition but not incomprehensible.
