Windows. I attempted to use remote desktop to log into my PC while I was at the library yesterday, but it didn't work properly. Then when I got home I found that it had somehow completely fucked up my PC so badly that it wouldn't even log on at first. I managed to get it mostly working again pretty quickly, but my desktop background was completely broken, and I couldn't access any of my encrypted files. And system restore wouldn't work, because it wanted to move those encrypted files around but couldn't.

I ended up staying up all night trying to fix it, eventually managed it just now by loading up a Linux live cd and using it to move every encrypted file on my PC to a different drive, then running system restore, then copying all the files back again. Took me ages, and was a real pain in the arse.

Now that is really weird, I use Remote access all the time, never had the slightest problem. You tried using the default Windows Remote PC Right ?
I think that was your mistake. What Windows you using ? XP ? cuz if so that explains a few things. XP doesn't handle well remote access with encrypted files.
I'm Using ThightVNC, it's freeware and if you figure out all options, it's simply awesome.

Windows 7, but connecting from a PC running Windows XP. It looks to me like it didn't log me out of my local session properly for some reason when I logged in remotely (since you're only supposed to have one user logged in at a time), and got horribly confused. I have absolutely no idea how or why it happened though.

Even more weird, cuz I access my home PC from work and phone and I have w7 at home and xp at work, using Java for phone lol

If you have problems with it later again, try rebooting while in control, everything should be ok afterwards. It also might have something to do with encrypted files.
