The person who cried was out of her depth I soon found, and I didn't have time to teach her from the beginning or smooth away her anxiety from a thousand and one personal issues.

Mostly what I've dealt with is people with large egos or general disdain for the whole thing who don't want to admit fault. The sort of poisoned work environments fostered in academic areas is palpable at times. The level of maturity is highly mixed, all sorts of personality politics take place, people's competency is far from assured, and most importantly some members are utterly unconcerned about academic achievement so long as they don't have to exert any effort. You can divide the work and provide all manner of organizational support, but short of actively doing all the work (which I've done on occasion) you can't be assured for the quality of the outcome.

The egos get worse in bureaucracies, and the competency little better. Still, I don't have to worry about anyone's performance, not my responsibility.

I can't say I envy you that situation.  Fortunately, I work with people who've mostly been in our industry for 10+ years (20 to 30 yrs in a few cases), and the majority of us have known each other for at least that long.  Ego is always a bit of a factor, but by far and large my coworkers are professionals and act accordingly.

I can tolerate lack of understanding or general ignorance of a task -- those are things I can work to correct.  What I get ticked off about is people who are fully capable of solving their own issues, or gathering their own data but who somehow think it's my responsibility to support them.  For example, this week, I kept getting requests from one person for particular pieces of data because she didn't have a user id & password for a particular test environment.  My thought was, "Really?  You've worked with this software longer than I have (I've got 11 years of experience), you know how to get this data, and you can't be bothered to request a user id so you can do your own data gathering?  I have to drop what I'm doing to get you your paltry bit of information?"

I'm a pretty firm believer in teaching people to be self-sufficient -- my take on the old adage is, "Give a man a fish, and he eats for a day.  Teach a man to fish, and then he can leave me the fuck alone so I can get back to doing my job."
It took an hour to write; I figured it'd take an hour to read.

The fact that I have to go to school for 3 hours on mondays (used to going to school for at least 5 hours).

I have to go to school for about 2 and a half hours every day.  Welcome to college.

I'm confused. Why would spending less time than you used to in class piss you off? I've always found it far preferable to not spend too much time in that setting. My butt, fingers, and brain go numb from the prolonged exposure... among other things.

I agree with seventy

I had a bit of a road to school, so going an hour to school for 3 hours is a waste of time. I usually skipped the days when I had less than 5 hours of school. An hour to school and an hour from school is 2 hours, and if it's just for 3 hours, it's wasted time. I had books that usually said the same thing as teacher in class.

Highschool should be only for people that want advanced education, not an obligatory. In elementary school people learn to read, count and do some more advanced stuff, geography, history, basics. But after that we know basics, we can read and count, we have books to teach us most of stuff and we attend school mainly to spend the time productively until you encounter a stupid teacher that thinks he is better than any of you. Well he's a teacher and you can become a president, who laughs now ?

Schools should always consider what difficulties some students have to even get to the school, be it elementary, high school or college/uni. Waste of time is waste of time.
