I agree that even if you have a long commute to get to school/uni/etc, it's still worth going in even if you only have a few hours of lectures. If it's an hour long commute, I'm guessing you're not going to be walking it, you'll be on a bus or train or something, in which case it's a good opportunity to get some studying done. Whenever I need to get the train into uni, which happens occasionally, I always spend the journey practicing kanji or vocab - which then leaves me free to spend the time at home doing something more interesting instead, when I'd have otherwise been stuck at my desk working.
It's different if your lecture's at 9am and you have an hour commute to get there though. I can understand not going in that case :p
