A university or college education is a personal and financial commitment, there are generally options for those constrained by occupation or family concerns, but otherwise it's a fairly sensible solution to consider low-budget local housing if commutes are too straining.

Even if it were an hour trip each way, that's two more hours you have free to which you can apply yourself elsewhere - like sleeping or reviewing the material.

ever considered a dorm close to school? There's also studying on nearby schools in the first place...

I live on a campus and my tiny tiny room costs me 455$CAN/month. I have until march 5st to decide if I wanna stay here next year or move out. Tough choice. Moving to a new place is a pain in the ass.

I bought a old townhouse from desperate sellers, my parents paid for repairs and furnishings - rented it out and eventually sold it at nearly double its worth 4 years later. Did my post-grad years at my parents house. Bought my current house with savings + earnings from the townhouse.

Anyways - I still don't see why spending less time in class is a bad thing - particularly if you live far away. Having an early lecture/seminar/lab can be vexing, especially if your not a morning person. Classes which just repeat easily understood textbook material is pretty lame too. But in either case you're still wasting less time doing so.

I agree that even if you have a long commute to get to school/uni/etc, it's still worth going in even if you only have a few hours of lectures. If it's an hour long commute, I'm guessing you're not going to be walking it, you'll be on a bus or train or something, in which case it's a good opportunity to get some studying done. Whenever I need to get the train into uni, which happens occasionally, I always spend the journey practicing kanji or vocab - which then leaves me free to spend the time at home doing something more interesting instead, when I'd have otherwise been stuck at my desk working.

It's different if your lecture's at 9am and you have an hour commute to get there though. I can understand not going in that case :p

Considering that it's run by the descendants of people who were too sexually inhibited to live in England, it's not surprising.

Yeah I pay a little under 4.5 grand for my dorm. It's tiny, but it means I can go to school. I'd rather go into debt that face life without higher education.

But as someone said, it's a personal choice.

I'm gunna leave you anyway.

The fact that it's cheaper for me to pay off my home loan in 5 years or less at my current rate than it is to refinance it for a 1% lower rate and pay it off in the same amount of time.  The difference?  Settlement costs, including an origination fee, which in sum are greater than the amount of money I'd save by having the lower rate.

On the bright side, it's good to have, as my roommate would put it, 'white people problems'.  You're looking at white middle class America right here, folks.
It took an hour to write; I figured it'd take an hour to read.

I have upper-middle-class Asian problems. Which typically revolve around feelings of inadequacy.

4.5 grand is pretty good for a dorm, though I don't know your definition of tiny. I stayed in the dorms for the first 6 months of my education whilst my home underwent major repairs to the wiring and plumbing - it was fairly comfortable. Cafeteria with sandwich bar and stir-fry cookery, cable and internet included, a private bathroom, and a queen sized bed for 5.9 thousand a year. Though the floor was somewhat cold all the time and I don't like wearing socks... I don't see why they couldn't put in plush carpeting.

My mouse causing double posts on tracker comments among other things. I've had this mouse for six years so I guess it's about time for a new one.

Yeah that's a lot nicer then mine. To be fair, mine is far from bad. It's about a 10x10 room with a closet, single bed, internet provided and a desk. I brought in a mini fridge. There are two cafe's with several different and rotating options. It also seems that I ended up on the floor where people party every night except Monday and Tuesday. Oh wait, that's just Arts and H-Kin kids in general.

Your dorm sounds nice.

I had the same problems with partying dorm mates as well. On three separate occasions I woke up to find my neighbour in my bed after he wondered into my room and passed out.

Anyone who insists on playing club music after 3AM in a crowded dorm deserves a long and painful death.

Oh it's very nice. That was my point.

Yeah, I blast music at awful hours of the night so I guess I can't really say much. And most of it is dance-inspiring in some way. I love my sub woofer.

But fuck them, if they want to keep me up I'm going to play my music loud and study until my eyes bleed. Which is really quite quickly... but you get the point.
