a forum i was on where people doesn't understand this:

the logic of what i'm saying is if you want to know if your rig can handle most games then find a game that scores worst in the FPS region, use that as a base-line.
why? its because if your rig scores good on the worst game then your rig is sure to pull off better FPS on any other games.

using statistics as basis means you're opting for the worst case scenario when calculating possibilities.
this is applying the logic "if my worst days gets me an A- on my tests, then my good days should get me better grades."
an example of this logic is windows 7 experience index, it uses the lowest score as your average score.

they just kept saying "no, this game is the best bench since it scores best."

Duh. Game benchmarks are always done with the most demanding games.

The people on that forum must be thinking along the lines of "If game A runs better than game B but also looks a bit better on equivalent settings, then game A should be the benchmark because it shows the maximum graphics I can get out of my rig."
However, a benchmark is used for comparison, not for showing off.
