The Dungeon Master from Dungeons and Dragons.

He appears like the Cheshire Cat from nothingness, filled with cryptic riddles and teasing words about getting home, only to push them into deadly peril again and again. He's like Willy Wonka, a sadistic bastard who's just there to screw with young people's minds.

Sounds like you need Old Man Henderson on your team.

Imagine one day, walking innocently down a local street on the way do an errand. You suddenly feel a cloth over your mouth and nose, a hand gripping it firmly in place. You sink into unconsciousness before fear has the chance to overwhelm you.

You wake up, your observable surroundings are indistinct and strange. Perhaps an empty field for as far as the eye can see, maybe an endless desert, or a humid rain forest. With you is a cellphone, apparently without an available signal. A medieval weapon, perhaps a sword, bow, or quarterstaff rests next to you. Finally, you're dressed in clothes fit for a Renaissance fair, or something less sophisticated.

Bedraggled, you're piecing together what happens when the phone rings. You've got a text message telling you to travel, on foot, far to the North/South/East/West through jungle/tundra/desert/marshland until you find some place that's likely to kill you to complete some asinine task and you can go home. Maybe break into a warlord or drug baron's estate and steal some document. Or ramble into some vicious local apex predators' lair and slay it. The request is phrased as such that it appears capricious and offhanded, like asking for the moon and the stars, until you realize that it's fully serious.

After much debate, perhaps after weighing the options, you decide to comply. At least then the nightmare will be over. After an epic series of events, you look to your cell phone. Up pops a new message. It's a picture file.

This is the Dungeon Master.

Well, if legal action fails, just use a shotgun :)

Well, it took a second phone call this evening, but supposedly a crew from the electric company is coming out tonight to assess my problem.  And the friendly phone rep forwarded my information to their claims department, so hopefully I will be able to get some reimbursement for at least some of the damages.  Wish me luck!

Edit -- ugh, power company technician / supervisor was here, is gone now.  Did not hear what I was expecting to hear.  Short answer, they aren't going to do dick, the power line was anchored the way it was supposed to be, and it's my responsibility to make sure everything (specifically, the riser and the facial board, I think I got that right) is in shape and capable of supporting the tension on the lines.  Other houses in my area have lines anchored the same way, apparently.

So first I've got to ensure that the riser is better anchored, and when that's done and I'm ready to replace the facial board, then I have to coordinate with them, and they'll release the tension on the anchor point.  So, fuck me, even though I don't like what I've been told, there is logic to what he said.  Have I mentioned lately how much I fucking hate owning a house?

Check other houses, and still complain about safety of this method to the authorities. It's NOT a safe method and if they use it wider and expect people to take care of their equipment that is just against regulations I think. This is not your equipment, why the hell are you supposed to maintain it ? are they going to pay you for working on it ? of course they won't and if you screw something up they will charge you for damaging it. I say, report this.

And I actually expected this course of action from them to be honest. Same thing happened in one of the small towns here in poland, nearly every house had this kind of thing, people tried changing it several times but the techs said this is how it's supposed to be so they went to experts on safety and got their written expertise that this is against safety regs and everyone demanded it fixed, the company didn't do it so people went to television. Then it was fixed and the company paid large financial penalties.

I gave it some thought, and rather than try to fix this crap myself, I put in a request at ServiceMagic.com to get an electrician to come out and repair the riser.  I used their referral service last year and found a really good contractor to install a new garage door on my house, and screening for quality contractors is their whole purpose.  I have the money to hire someone, so I may as well not screw around with it myself.

People who take real working technologies and try to sell them by wrapping them up in woo, such that everyone with a little bit of common sense will immediately think it's a scam.
Don't just assume that you are right. Verify with the best tools available and if you are wrong, change your mind and you will become right.

I have a feeling I've complained about this before, but It's been annoying me again today, so:

Scanlators, and their apparent inability to speak proper English. And inability to understand Japanese properly too in some cases, by the looks of it.

Seriously, I've never actually managed to finish reading a manga, ever, because every time I try I get so frustrated with the abysmal translations I have to give up a few chapters in. It's really annoying. I think I managed to break my record today by getting halfway through volume 2 of Azumangah Daioh before the way they handled (or more accurately, didn't handle) the Bruce Lee joke finally pushed me over the edge, but that's further than I usually manage.

And most of the mistakes are so obvious too, you can easily spot them instantly without even having the original Japanese text to compare it with. They clearly don't even pretend to try and double-check their work, let alone do any actual QC. It just makes no sense to me, at all. What's the point of translating it into English, if half of what you write is unintelligible to most English speakers?

Ugh, it really gets on my nerves. Anyway, sorry, rant over now. I just wanted to vent somewhere, and this seemed like the best place for it :P

Couldn't agree with you more, Bob. There are some groups that try to be as literal as they can with their translations that the flow of the dialogue feels broken. I think that comes down to understanding the nuances of English. As someone who is part of a scanlation group, I can say that we sometimes have to add extra text or remove text to make the dialogue or narratives flow better for English speakers.

I think that there are more "bad" groups that scanlate Shoujo, Shounen and hentai manga. I only base that on the fact that there are more translated manga in those genres than any other lol. It just seems more apparent. The groups that predominately work on Seinen manga, however, are pretty good in my opinion. Since Seinen stories have more mature and more complex stories than the other genres, the translations have to be well written or else readers would get lost very fast.
And even though we feel dead inside, we can still say, "At least we tried."

Total piss off today. The subway station where usually three to four people max come in had roughly fifty this time. Come on, they can at least wait a couple of minutes for the next train! And this dumbass trying to squeeze in in front of me reeked like crack: his backpack was even worse. Time to go down the stairs? Slowpokes, every last one of them, and some hag thought it was smart to slip in front of me when I was about to make my first step. Needless to say I missed the next train below, because these idiots all take their freaking two minutes to make their way to the bottom when I simply needed a generous 7 seconds. Then as I made my way to another staircase up, a geezer was walking slow as hell, but not enough for me to get around him.

Retards.

Half the time it doesn't even seem to be the scanlators trying to be literal though, it mostly just seems to be them not paying any attention to what they're doing. There are times when their translations don't make any sense at all - even after checking the original Japanese. This page for example - they seem to have pulled the "Hawk's claw" out of nowhere. Nothing in the original Japanese mentions anything to do with hawk's claws (it actually says 鷹の爪, which means cayenne pepper. The only other meanings of the word are a kind of deciduous tree, and a type of green tea, according to the dictionary. Nothing to do with hawks, or claws). That's a particularly egregious example, but still.

I will admit that scanlating manga is probably relatively hard (compared to anime, anyway), since not only do you have to try and fit everything into the speech bubbles (made worse since Japanese is vertical, so a box which holds a whole sentence in Japanese might only be wide enough for a 3-4 letter word in English), but what is a very short phrase in Japanese can't necessarily be reproduced in a similar length sentence in English. You'd think that would mean they need to pay more attention, but I guess not.

I don't know why I keep ranting about it though, since it's not really the end of the world. I think I just hate having the manga versions of my favourite anime, like Saki and Azumanga, be so hard to read. :(
