Without a doubt. I have an electrician & a carpenter coming out on Sunday. What's going to happen is, they're going to first replace the split soffett (sp?) board, then install a new mast & weatherhead. They basically are going to extend the assembly about 2 feet to the left, then the new mast / riser will extend through the new soffett board and through my roof. They'll reinforce it all, put a rubber boot on it, and seal it all against the weather. So it will be secured in the attic directly to the structure of the house.

The electrical work will cost about $800, not sure about the carpentry just yet, but I imagine it will be a couple hundred dollars. This will resolve my split soffett board issue, the problem with the mast pulling away from the house, and will prevent the original problem from reoccurring.

Fuck Progress Energy anyway. I'm hoping my contractors will resolve the problem once and for all.

Eh, I just want it fixed at this point so I can stop worrying about it. The cost isn't much of a concern, not like I don't have the money. And I'm just not motivated enough to fight city hall, if you understand the expression.

There are plenty of good, legitimate reasons to hate one politician or another, if people would just bother to sift through the material and dig out what's true, rather than just believing the most convenient bit of crap on hand.

No kidding. We're already a laughingstock. It grates on me when members of my own family contribute to this image.

On a good note, my immediate house woes have been resolved. The electrician didn't have to extend my riser, and instead anchored that sucker to the block of my house so thoroughly that the house itself will have to come down before it will. That plus some related electrical stuff was $500. The carpenter was very reasonable -- only cost me $180 to tear out the broken soffett board and replace it, much cheaper than I expected. Turns out that electic company missed the stud when they anchored the ground line, so those fuckers are 100% responsible for damaging my house. The fact that they missed the stud is what caused the board to ultimately split, since the anchor was not supported properly.

On the bright side, though, I probably wouldn't have known to repair the riser if the soffett board hadn't been broken. And the first hurricane that hit my area would have probably brought the riser down, which would have been probably a few grand to fix all of the damage. And it turns out that the carpenter does general home renovation, so I'm bringing them back out to do a few other home projects for me.

So some good came out of all of this mess after all.

Most likely I will ask the power company to reimburse my expenses, but I will probably have to take them to court to get it. Not worth the time & effort for a mere $180. There's no way I'm going to get the $480 back, since the repair of the riser is very definitely my responsibility.

Also, midly annoyed by the fact that I got sunburned yesterday when a) I really should know better, and b) I'm usually pretty careful about avoiding that if I'm going to be outside for hours on end. I got burned on the tops of my feet (was wearing flip flops), on my forehead, my neck, and on my scalp (sucks to have thinning hair). I've got some nice white marks on top of my feet from the flip flop thongs, which looks kind of weird.

@Ixarku You could contact them and threaten to sue. Even if you have no intention to do it, many people would and getting sued would cost them a lot more than 180$. It quite possible that they will take your bluff seriously and just give you your 180$ to shut you up. At the company I work at, we have a department specifically there to answer complains like this one.

Remember, stay calm and don't insult when you call them. Just ask for a refund and if you get a know, calmly say it's a matter of principle for you and they won't give you a refund, you will have to sue them. Don't hesitate do ask for a supervisor if insisting doesn't help you as he might not have enough power, even if he says the supervisor won't do it either, but never attack the person you talk to directly or yell. It's the worst thing you could do. Nobody likes to help someone who yell or insult them.
