But yeah, I was talking about a home heating system. All it has is "Heat / Cool" and "On / Auto / Off" along with the temperature dial. There's not really a timer or anything on it.
AKA, central heat & air. I have the same thing. Very common in Florida, actually. And I used to have a similar issue as you, where it seemed to get either too hot or too cold in the house at different times. If you haven't had the insulation in your house checked out recently, it's a good idea to do so. I had some new insulation added to my attic back in June, and I think it's made a positive impact on my electric bill since then. And it seems like my house stays at a consistent temperature with less effort from the heat or A/C.
Temperature-wise, I've found that, since it's gotten cooler, if I leave my heat set on 73F at night, it stays comfortable enough in the house to sleep, and when I get up in the morning, it's warm enough to jump in and out of the shower without feeling like I'm going to freeze my butt off.
I do have an extra space heater sitting around in a closet somewhere though, so it's definitely something I could do... I'd rather find one locally though like Sutherlands / Lowes / Walmart / Home Depot or something so I don't have to pay for shipping (nor wait 3+ weeks).
I recommend avoiding using a space heater at all if possible. I always hear that they are fire hazards, and insurance companies don't tend to like it when people use them. If you own your home, your homeowner's insurance might have a problem with it if something happens -- but you'd have to confirm that with them or check your policy. Another option if you are going to be in your home for a long time is to consider upgrading your air handler and/or getting a new thermostat. Or at least getting an A/C company to check out your existing setup in order to make some recommendations.
