My coworker.

- He's too fucking stupid to give helpful error descriptions ("The share search doesn't display anything", meaning "The share search view isn't loaded, and the search bar is missing"; my understanding "the result list is always empty" led to finding another bug he didn't even discover yet, just by staring at his code...)
- He comes to me crying for help without even trying to figure out what could be the source of the problem himself (he was trying to bind to a property that didn't exist, which produces a really nice red output message along the lines of "The Property P1 isn't found on the object of type T1. Binding Target is P2 of type T2 on the object T3", and the code behind magic for showing the search bar was missing completely)
- He is too stupid to copy 4 goddamn files... if he wasn't, the damn search bar would have been displayed from the start. And instead of checking if he maybe forgot to copy something, he immediately came crying for help.

One day I'm going to lose my patience and kill him for sure.

On a side note: This is even more annoying than usual as I'm sick at home today, so every time he fails to do his fucking job, I have to start up teamviewer and hope that it allows me to connect to my work computer, then find the fucking problem, fix it (without the ability to delete whole words without highlighting them first, as CTRL+Backspace gets swallowed by teamviewer somehow) and then test it while trying not to snap at the whole lot of annoying little problems which come with remote controlling a two screen system with only a single screen...

You could recommend him for a promotion instead.

Yup. He may seem incompetent and replaceable enough at his current job to do that.

My coworker.
[snip]

I'm glad I'm not the only person who's miserable in a software development job.

Although today I talked to one of my coworkers / old friends who works in another division at my company, on the same floor as I do but in a different part of the building, and there's likely going to be a position opening up in her group that might be a good fit for me, as a data analyst.  So I have to give it some serious thought.  I've been a software tester for 14 years, 12 at my current company, so it's tough to overcome the inertia of doing the same type of work for so long and make a change.  I have to decide if all of the positives & negatives of my current position outweigh the possible benefits & risks of switching jobs.  That, and I'll have to find out if it's at least a lateral move -- I can afford a pay cut, but it would set back my long term plans, which is not acceptable to me right now.
It took an hour to write; I figured it'd take an hour to read.

Wait a minute. Opportunities piss you off? You are more of a malcontent than Dilbert.

Oops, no, that's not what I meant.  It was just a tangent.  Although I am a malcontent, I just haven't developed a Dilbert-like thick skin to be able to weather the things that disgruntle me.

What actually pisses me off is that I can't decide if my general job dissatisfaction is just me being a crybaby, or if I actually have legitimate reasons to dislike my job.  I can't figure out if I'm just stuck in a rut, or if it's that my natural tendency to brood and be pessimistic is overwhelming the other parts of my personality.

In other words, do I just need a change of scenery, or an attitude adjustment?  You know how when you feel down already, every little thing seems worse than it really is, and it just brings you down even more?  I feel that way a lot.  And then I start to get passive-aggressive, which pisses me off even more, because I'm better than that.

God damn it... What.cd said their freeleech tokens would expire at the end of the month, and I had like 90 of them and I procrastinated and was going to use them today but I just checked and they're all already gone...

I was once, then Congress started with the Reg Z bullshit, and everything went downhill from there.  Fucking years later, and we're still making software changes for clients who suddenly discover they're out of compliance on one thing or another.  Hell, I've got to review a test plan (that I didn't write) on the reg changes for one client in the next few days, then hold a damn quality inspection of it.  Fuck Barney Frank and Chris Dodd.

I was also relatively gruntled before we were forced to start outsourcing some of our development & testing to India, which goes back at least 5 years now.  Working with the offshore testers is one of my longest running gripes; I hate it with a passion.  I'm strongly opposed to outsourcing -- among other things, it creates tedious busy work for us here, because we have to go back and recheck everything the Indian contractors do.  They're hard workers, and some of the developers & testers are pretty smart, but they're so fucking inconsistent in the quality of what they deliver that we can't trust them.  Maybe 80, 85, 90% of the work they deliver is fine, but it's the stuff that they miss that bites us in the ass later.  And they require more handholding than I'm willing to give them.  I just want to spend time on my own work, testing my own projects, instead of babysitting other people's work.

Sounds like there're empirically demonstrable good reasons for not outsourcing. Can you bring it to someone's attention that the company's bottom line is being hurt?
