Zack Snyder's Watchmen.
I know it's oft panned by the comic's fans and not so loved generally, but the first time I watched it I could honestly say I didn't hate it. I was drawn into the depiction of this stark and interesting alternate past.
So, I decided to watch it again last night after 2-ish years. It really doesn't hold up, not at all. After the impressive opening sequence I was pretty much bored for 2 hours until it's conclusion. Considering its subject material and the sheer uniqueness its difficult to believe I could be so... apathetic. Now I'm just kind of disillusioned.
I criticize popular entertainment for its dearth of originality, who doesn't these days? Particularly in the big-budget stuff that actually gets through the studios and production process. When I learned of the shelving of Lovecraft's At The Mountains of Madness movie adaptation, based off of studio fears that something without an identifiable love story or happy ending simply couldn't be made, I couldn't help feeling relieved that Del Toro wasn't willing to compromise Lovecraft the way The Haunting 1999 "remake" threw its source material under the bus. It's one of the definitive works in the horror genre and I think a beloved classic by those who can stomach Lovecraft's writing, but obviously cosmic horror tests poorly with audiences, I guess for the same reason Dick keeps getting movie adaptations which undercut the entire message of his works.
Here we have Watchmen, a tragedy satirizing and deconstructing the modern Superhero mythos and American history like Death of Salesman meets Man of Steel, this is something we really haven't seen in theatres, even with Nolan's darker realism or more niche stuff like Kick-Ass. It's just boring,. There are other obvious flaws sure, from a comic fan or movie fan standpoint, and parts which weren't flawed at all, but the overall effect was... "meh."
I just have the feeling that lost opportunities like this lead to increased skepticism in Hollywood that going off their dozen or so formulas is self-defeating,
