So more house woes today. I have an exterior section of wood on the house near the roof that needs to be replaced and an adjacent soffet (sp?) board. As my contractor was working on it today, he found some pretty significant signs of water damage in the area nearby. I have a satellite dish on the corner of the roof (it was already there when I bought the house, and I've never had the satellite TV active). Turns out that whoever installed the dish didn't seal around it, so water leaked through there and damaged the underlying plywood & roof.
If the damage had gone undiscovered for long enough, the leakage would have penetrated to the room underneath and would have led to a serious mold problem. It also would have eventually damaged the tresses. Fortunately, my contractor caught the problem and the initial estimate to fix it is about $700. Which is a lot better than thousands of dollars later down the road once it became a full fledged disaster.
So the lesson, folks, is if anybody ever installs something on your roof, get up there and inspect it and make damn sure that they've sealed it properly with tar.
