Farcry 3.

I've had this game since last new years, it was an unexpected gift from a friend who I did a favour for. I took it out of the box for a few hours of messing around but otherwise it fell to the wayside as I went back to play RPG's I've had forever. So, I've just completed the single player campaign over the last 10 hours or so.

It's... just sort of hollow. I can't exactly explain it in words, but something just keeps holding me back from having that experience it's clearly trying to create. It keeps towing this line between holding my interests and falling into ambivalence. The gameplay is fine, the actual mechanics are smooth  and the quests are never so long that they become a chore. It doesn't overtax you with pointless fetch quests and the poker, racing, and hunting is fun to a degree. The story and script writing is annoying, but I expected that going in. There's just so much meh here.

I'd prefer to dislike an experience, over half-enjoying it. It just leaves me wistful.
I actually really liked that game. Regarding the story, the way I see it (and, I've found, many others too) is that it's *supposed* to seem really hollow. There's this average frat-boy kid who isn't very intelligent, led a sheltered life, and probably loved stuff like Call of Duty. You thrust this guy into that island where his friends keep dying, put a gun into his hand, tell him he's some sort of legendary hero with superpowers. It's going to seem like a fantasy come true for him. He's not your average protagonist, he is very shallow and immature for most of the game. For example, notice his reactions in the marijuana-burning scene and the rail-shooter sequences. Then you factor in his friends who can't get a grip on the fact that he's actually killing hundreds of people out there, and frequent drugging by the tribals. You have a mentally and emotionally unstable guy who is told that he can kill anybody. That's as hollow as you can get.
Both the endings make sense to me. They aren't anything great but the way I see it, it couldn't have ended any other way. It had become quite obvious to me while playing that the tribals weren't just going to let him leave. The "good" ending has you realizing just how hollow everything has been, and deciding to go back to civilization. The other one was a bit of a surprise tbh but the reasoning behind it makes sense. Besides, if he wants to be that much of a jackass, he probably deserved it.

Oh and if you liked the core combat gameplay, make sure to play FarCry Blood Dragon. It's good trashy fast-paced fun without any depth or baggage.

There was a story in that game? jk I thought it was a great story and the script felt intentionally "bad" either way one of the few x-plat games I own.

People who are so critical of everything they can't enjoy anything.

I keep butting heads with forum people talking about movies and anime, and what they actually admit to liking is such a narrow list of "Oh, you probably have never heard of it" type titles that I wonder why they bother trying anything if they're just going to break out the electron microscope of cynicism and claim, despite what you might infer from the glossy surface, it's fecal matter underneath. If you challenge anything they do admit to liking you end up wading through a firing squad of condescending walls of text arguments about why you're both wrong and utterly lacking in taste.

Seriously, I suggested that Oshii's interpretation of Shirow's Ghost in the Shell had a feminist subtext, I think being mauled by a bear would be less jarring. Apparently opinions are fine, so long as you're willing to type a graduate thesis paper in support of your position. I watched the Ghost in the Shell movie years ago, I didn't exactly take notes. I'm willing to admit that's my interpretation, they however, are not despite claims to the contrary. I said I loved Suisei no Gargantia despite some of its problems, boy was that a mistake. I even dared to praise Evangelion for being entertaining and holding significance in anime as a whole, apparently Anno is a hack and NGE couldn't be more irrelevant.

So basically, I hate women and small animals. I'm too tired to disagree..

Ah, but you've yet to hear my opinion on Kinoko Nasu, Pacific Rim, and Superman.  There are African warlords using drug-addled child soldiers as cannon fodder more beloved than I.

My body always betrays me when I most want it to play hooky. It's like "What? You want sleep seven whole hours? Who the hell do you think you are? Now, you'll take this headache as a goddamn reminder of why you shouldn't screw with me and you'll like it, capiche?"

I haven't seen it yet either, I'm going tomorrow with a friend who's an ardent lover of Godzilla and Kaijuu of all sorts and demanded I remain a Pacific Rim virgin until she's back from Las Vegas (she does marketing for MMA fights, which personally bore the shit out of her). So I'll share my thoughts then.

Mostly my ear chewing was on the issue of whether it was derivative of NGE, which I can't comment on for the above reason, but I would say it wouldn't be the apocalypse if it were.

Getting a small flu when I'm on vacation... Why is this happening to me?
I'm supposed to enjoy beachlife and late nights, and not have a running nose, sore throath and cotton head...

Not fair!
