Ah, but you've yet to hear my opinion on [...] Pacific Rim
I can't decide whether or not I should go to watch it, so please do tell.
I haven't seen it yet either, I'm going tomorrow with a friend who's an ardent lover of Godzilla and Kaijuu of all sorts and demanded I remain a Pacific Rim virgin until she's back from Las Vegas (she does marketing for MMA fights, which personally bore the shit out of her). So I'll share my thoughts then.
I saw Pacific Rim on Saturday. I enjoyed it. It was loud as hell. It's not going to win any Oscars for Best Picture, but it was entertaining. The visuals were of course top-notch, and the music fit well. The story was completely straightforward and unsubtle (no surprise there) but the filmmakers didn't ruin it by throwing in a lot of convoluted nonsensical explanations of the technologies at work. The film was basically, "Here's an apocalyptic threat, and here's how we deal with it. Oh yeah, and here's some character drama, too." None of the characters annoyed me, which is also a pleasant surprise in this type of movie. I thought the ending and the last few battles were a bit weak compared to the rest of the film, but it's a minor complaint. The pacing throughout the film was solid, though; it certainly didn't feel like it was 2 hours long.
I don't see how someone who grew up on Godzilla movies wouldn't enjoy this. Again, don't expect some kind of deep philosophical reflections here, but for a summer popcorn movie, it's good.
