Isn't the coreavc combo even less resource intensive than a codec(like CCCP or K-lite) combo?

I think it is.  You need CCCP for Haali media splitter so you can play ordered chapters.

It is, and you don't need the whole CCCP for Haali Media Splitter, that can be found as a separate download.

My HP netbook with a 9400m can play 720p MKV no problem.

A netbook running an Atom N270 is probably able to play 720p no problem. 1080p is another story. Mine runs the N450 so it's got a bit more juice. Dunno about AMD's stuff; I don't really follow them.

This is assuming you're running Win7 Starter. Installing Linux would probably make it faster. Also assuming you're not using Windows Media Player. IMO ZoomPlayer is the best choice because it's lightweight, more so than MPCHC from my experience.

Thanks for the computer advice. Will anyone even be uploading 720p next year? I'm already seeing a lot of uploads that are only available in 1080p or bluray. Resolution snobs :)

Thanks, it's a bit pricier than what I've been looking at but much more capable. Technology does that to me a lot. Stupid technology  :)

I might get that one as I've just had an expected expense turn out to be a lot less expensive than I'd planned for, not buy a new laptop type savings but still good. I wouldn't want to move on laptop bit just now anyway as part of the laptop replacement plan will be to register at the local city college and use my student status to get huge, pay off tuition and then some student discounts on software for the new machine.

1080p offers no noticeable change in quality but makes the file size disgustingly massive.  26 Episodes of Clannad was 23GB.  The same 26 in 720p was 13GB.  Do I really want to DL 10GB more?

I know I don't, hopefully it's just a passing fad or I'm noticing a trend that isn't really there but I keep seeing new offerings in ridiculous resolutions only and nothing reasonable.

Lots of uploads available in 1080p only?  I don't think so I challenge you to point me to a single show/movie/OVA that is only available in 1080, all the items that I can see on this site have either a 480 or 720 version available.

I don't know about your eyes but I like to watch my anime on my desktop PC and on my TV and I find 1080 noticeably better quality than 720.  With 1TB hard drives costing AU$100 that 10GB more of download is costing me a MASSIVE $1 worth of storage space!  I’m happy to use that much bandwidth/storage to have a nicer viewing experience.
And if you are watching Clanned on an old laptop where 1080 is not any better than 720 no one is forcing you to get the large version.  This site has the smaller copy just as readily available, you can even get the 480 version just as simply and save that $1 of hard drive space.

I find it dumb that you are using words like fad, ridiculous and disgusting to describe a resolution that no one is forcing you to use and provides noticeable benefits to people who do like it.

Yobbin2000: You deleted my smiley after the words "resolution snobs" that rather changes the tone of my remark. If you're going to rebut someone's comment then quote in full.
I've got nothing against anyone wanting to watch in the best resolution available and I hope to be one of those people who don't need the lower resolution version myself someday.

Bluray is the same as 1080p in this case.

I don't know how to include a link in a way that proves that another link does not exist, so it's just a case of prove a negative, so whatever.
About every 4th or 5th new show that I'd care to watch, thing about trends is that it could be half or more of all new shows next year and then I'd regret not getting a machine that could handle 1080p/bluray.

Thanks rathoriel, I've ordered it. That was an even better price than the best one I saw on Amazon.com and shipping was still free too.

I'll be posting my experiences with the player when it arrives, seeing as I cheaped out and didn't expedite processing or shipping that will be a few days.

thanks for the advice sapsa but I won't (hopefully) have to buy a tv any time soon. It's good to know about that though.

Looked the Samsung c650 up, impressive!

lol you missed the part about him not being able to afford even a netbook for increased playback didn'cha? :P

AFAIK, the playback built into the tv is sort of silly. It's nice to have if you have it, but it's definitely not a selling point for me personally. Probably because I have no space issues or lacking in inputs for my TVs and I don't mind extra cables (because they can hook to other stuff generally).

As for the blu ray thing... I don't mind it, but have no use for it yet. However, it really does remind me of the midi vs mp3 "issue" back in the day. Give me another 2-3 years and I'll not even care.

Got it. Actually it was waiting for me when I got home late on Tuesday. They sent it fedex anyways but didn't charge me for shipping, so good for me. Navigating the directories on my usb thumbdrive was easy, any file it could play would show up when I navigated to a folder and any that it couldn't play were invisible. Pictures, music and video files except for mkv all did well. Trying to find a 16x9 aspect ratio in my collection but everything high resolution seems to be mkv.

Why is mkv the preferred format for large video files? I know there's some technical reason that I couldn't appreciate with my old piece of junk but mainly it meant can only watch up to 360p instead of 480p.

Tried it with one of my external hard drives but it only reads fat not ntfs. Going to reformat my older smaller drive as fat32 and load it up with stuff to watch just as soon as I'm sure I've backed up anything I don't want to lose, this will give me easy access to stuff to watch if it works but mainly I just want to see if it does work.

Well, the main reasons mkv are used instead of anything else are probably:
- AVI is outdated, and you can't usually put h264/avc1 video in it due to limited b-frame support. Also, good luck trying to put Vorbis audio in it.
- WMV is ... no, let's not talk about WMV
- OGG is weird, also, lol no AAC, AC-3, DTS support.
- MP4 would be ok, but lol no FLAC support. Also, the tools to make/edit mp4 are horrible, and they all suck. Has sometimes trouble handling >1 subtitle tracks.
- MKV can fit a lot of video/audio/sub tracks of any format that isn't APE or ALAC. Also, the tools are easy to use and the whole stuff is open-source. Also supports ordered chapters / linked files.

but the main reason is that MKV is cool.

It doesn't support .ass either I think.

Yeah, forgot to add that too, you can convert the .ass to .ttxt (.ass -> .srt, and then .srt -> .ttxt) and mux that into the .mp4 container to get styled subs, although the original .ass styling is lost in this conversion and you have to re-do it afterwards.

Thanks for the replies to my mkv question. Of course all that power and flexibility and coolness comes at a price in what it will demand of your hardware. Of course that's only really a problem for those of us who've had to make do with the same laptop for too many years. It looks good for replacing that machine in 4-5 months, especially as I've just made a major stab at some entertainment savings :) . Still working on the copying of stuff from the usb drive I'll reformat as fat32 and use as my video library hooked up to the DVD player.

Please show me where I used the words Fad or Ridiculous.  Obviously, HD space is not an issue.  In Canada, for 60$ a month gets me 60gb bandwidth so that 10gbs is 1/6 of my allowance.  I'm commenting on the quality difference from my iMac, which has a resolution of 2560x1440.  If you are sitting a reasonable distance away you cannot see the difference at all.  I'm not compaining that anyone is forcing me, but am simply refuting your argument now.

The lighting difference is because I paused slightly after.

For on a budgest something like the popcorn hour A200 is $179 and usually free shipping from amazon, and it will play almost any anime and now ASS/SSA subs are looking really nice on it except for karaoke.
