Atlus shut down?
« on: September 23, 2010, 04:54:23 AM »
aww man. i was quickly skimming some past Sankaku pages to see if they had pics of cosplayers from TGS and found this article:

http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2010/08/31/atlus-is-no-more/

I guess Atlus is being shut down? Has anyone heard about this? Their website still seems up and i dont see anything about it there. Thats kinda sad if they are closing their doors. They're the guys that brought us persona and brought over the first Disgaea, as well as good stuff like Odins sphere, growlanser, Stella Deus, ect. They also came out with 3d.game heroes recently which is fun.

I think they were working on a couple games.. persona 5 and some other stuff. I wonder if that will still get a release. Supposedly they're being absorbed by some parent company but i have no idea what that means in the end, or if they'll keep bringing old school style rpgs over.

Just thought id share for those who hadn't heard yet,a nd see if anyone had more info on what the deal is here

according to wikipedia "On 30 August 2010, Index Holding announced that Atlus would no longer be an independent company and would be under their direct control".

guess that means they will still be doing the games, and in the link you posted it says "However, it has also been announced that future game releases by the consolidated company will continue to use the “Atlus” brand where appropriate – its history as a distinct entity is at an end though".

guess that means atlus is going to be gone but its name lives on kinda thing

Does that mean the developers are different for subsequent games?

You're mixing up the localization company (Atlus USA) and the Atlus that makes the games. Different entities.

Atlus Japan actually MAKES all the Shin Megami Tensei games, not just publishes them, so this is pretty sad.  If this news affects anything, it would be the creation of those games.

The Disgaea and La Pucelle localizations they did were really good. Sad to see them gone.  :'(

Edit: Ooops, La Pucelle wasn't done by them  :P

They are still making games, it's just that Index Holdings has like a tighter leash on them or something.

They're working on Catherine right now, which is in the same universe as Persona (the protagonist of Catherine was in the PSP port of Persona 3).

It's not as bad as being owned by Activision, I suppose.  Poor Infinity Ward.

what IS  Catherine anyway? i saw some blips about it on Sak complex. It looks like some hentai game actually?

honestly im not sure what this means, or what Index holding them by a tighter leash will mean in the long run. If the US company is still ok that doesn't matter much when the japanese branch was the one developing most of the games =P

I don't think they'd allow that kind of content on home consoles.

Apparently they are. :v I'd say they'd make it onto the Japanese version, but if it was ever to be localized Sony would probably require them to be removed.

Atlus only develops the Megami Tensei, Etrian Odyssey, and Trauma Center series.  Atlus wasn't involved in the production of any of the other games you mentioned.  It seems as though the impetus for the dissolution of Atlus as an independent financial entity was most likely Index's goal from the beginning, and that the failure of their arcade business gave Index that opportunity.

For the last five years, Index has been in control of Atlus at the financial level; this was just the final step in that takeover.

There better be sex scenes in NA localization.

so all the american Atlus company branch does is import OTHER companies games then i guess? other than the Persona series, ect? If thats so then i guess there wont be any real impact other than possible stall of a new persona games, or whats going on with Catherine. As well as Index just controlling them a lot more on what they make from here on out (as Seventy says). Kinda sucks

Which reminds me im still am not clear on what the hell it is.. if its gonna be an ero game, or just a game with some ecchi/sex scenes? I saw one trailer and it looked like a huge mind fuck. I guess one of the characters appears in the psp game.. not sure if its the main guy or the catherine chick

If it DOES venture across the boundary of ero, or even just show SOME skin, I guarantee it will be cut for American release, and I will be quite displeased.   >:(
