Wireless!
« on: September 26, 2010, 01:19:20 PM »
Sooo I'm planning on moving my desktop computer into my bedroom, and I really don't want to pay Comcast to come move the whole connection, so I'm going to get a wireless card.
Problem is, I know nothing about them.

Any suggestions for a good wireless card? I'm not worrying about price.

Why don't you just buy some cables and make an extension to yoru bedroom? Wouldn't it be simple and cheaper?

Dammit Pharismo that's not how things work.
I know D-Link has one or two PCI wireless network cards, but it's only up to G.

I have heard good things about this card:
DWA-556 XTREME N PCI EXPRESS DESKTOP ADAPTER
Connection is PCI-E.
It has the 802.11n standard (2nd draft)
Also, if you have Win7 it should be more or less plug & play.
MRP from D-Link is 75USD.

he said he wouldn't pay for comcast to move the connection so he could do it by himself.
+ on SOME countries it is a LOT cheaper to buy some cables and move it by himself them buying a new card.

By saying "I don't want to pay Comcast to move the connection," I meant that they charge me $40 to go up into my attic and move the cable wire from the living room outlet to the cable outlet in my bedroom.

The problem with buying and using cables myself is that there's no way to make it so that the cable can't be seen- it'd either be going straight across my living room into my bedroom or have to be taped along the wall or ceiling or something. I'm really not going to try to put it under my carpet, either.

I have a Linksys WRT160N router, so basically all I need is the wireless card so my PC can have wireless capability.

Also, yeah I have Win7.
Looks like you guys are leaning towards D-Link. I guess I'll check it out, then.

How far would your computer be from your router?  Wireless can get kind of unreliable.

Hmm...about 20-25 feet + a wall in between.
My internet connection is very good, and my former piece-of-shit laptop always had a great connection when I was in my bedroom. (I got the exact same speeds in there as I have with my wired desktop right now)

Probably be fine if your router is not ancient.

I like the new avi/sig, where it from?

Has anyone even bothered to consider one of those USB sticks? True, takes up a USB slot, but is a little easier to install than the typical wifi card (Which isn't a huge issue in the first place... it's almost like slightly more complicated RAM) and isn't like kicking down walls to install lines of cat cable.

http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=31&name=Wireless-Adapters

Not too many draft N options, but if your router doesn't even have draft N in the first place, there's really no point.

I cannot vouch for the consistency of such products... but I will say that USB probably would have a slightly higher perceived failure rate because it sticks out and isn't encased. A monkey steals your USB adapter, you drop a book and it snaps off, you overheat it from attempting to dl 500GB of pr0n in 1 night... etc. Which is less likely in the internal card... but yeah.
This is your home now. So take advantage of everything here, except me.
