Personally, I'd go with FFFpeeps if I didn't just DL the raw and watch it before any group released :P

Agreed. FFFpeeps, as a sub group, are pretty good. I also dont like the squid puns so its the natural best selection for me!
Nothing against people who like them, but they just dont do anything for me. A big reason would be that they just dont translate literally so it feels almost forced into the subtitles.

Which is how I feel about most of UWs subtitles for this show. If a pun has a literal translation then use it, otherwise just translate the idea and dont put too much thought into it.

pingryanime:
One of the biggest roadblocks as a translator is translating linguistic puns, especially if they're homonym-based jokes or jokes which revolve around compounding two separate words with the same beginning/ending. Since these jokes are based off of how they sound when spoken, translating them into english, an entirely different language, is obviously no simple task.

Sometimes, jokes CAN be translated into english with minimal pun-loss, but for the majority of cases, you're stuck with the choice of dropping the pun, making a completely different pun, or forcing the pun in a somewhat unnatural manner.

Allow me to quote something from here:

--- Quote ---Shinryaku!? Ika Musume  Difficulty 5 (9)

Crunchyroll = A- (C), LS-8
The translation part is mostly good. Few questionable lines, but nothing too severe. Concise lines get to the point.

FFFpeeps = C+ (D-), LS-4
Many translation mistakes in the script ranging from serious misinterpretations to minor dodging. It’s understandable for the most part, but their subs don’t always represent what’s actually being said despite being more literal than CR.

Also, I find it quite amusing for you to talk about pun handling when your solution with Nichijou was to use translation notes for everything, which served as a great way of killing any potential fun to be found in them. Jokes are never funny if you have to explain them.

Havoc10K:
For once Daiz, and that scares the shit out of me, we agree.

JoonasTo:
NOES!
What happened to EIKO!
