stupid mIRC...Whats a good IRC client?
« on: October 07, 2010, 11:30:22 PM »
well, crap. I got a message saying a new version of mIRC was out so i d.loaded and installed it and now its forcing me to register and pay >_< i should have stayed with the old version, but i dont still have the instal file for that.

Is there a free version of that one out there anywhere? And if not, whats a good free IRC client? I've only used mIRC in the past and am not really familiar with any other clients or which ones work good. I would only be using it to d.load anime, i dont chat or do anything else with it

I never use any advanced features in irc, the only thing I actually use it for is xdcc, so for me chatzilla is enough since I also use firefox.
For one thing, Tiff is not on any level what I would call a typical American.  She's not what I would consider a typical person.  I don't know any other genius geneticist anime-fan martial artist marksman model-level beauties, do you?

I'm with AceHigh. I used mIRC for years (maybe decades). But it has a tough time with Japanese font. (yeah, there are workarounds) but it doesn't make it easy for you. I've since switched to firefox's chatzilla and haven't looked back.

One of the better clients happens to be one that you are not able to run, assuming you are running windows.

Been running IRSSI for all my IRC stuff.  A couple of people have got it to run under Cygwin but I have no experience of running it that way.  It would be a interesting learning experience in playing in things of not-Windows to see if you can get it running there.

i never did try using chatzilla. Maybe i'll try doing that untill i find something better. You can do the DCC sends and stuff on it right? thats all i ever use it for. I dont know the termonoligy but i think its the xdcc that ace mentions. Basically where you type the keywords in and get the files, ect.

id still like an individual client though. No one has a good sugestion? mIRC worked fine, but they seem to make you pay with the new update which sucks. I tried clicking the register link but when i hit continue it just boots me out >_<

yChat or pChat which are both free windows builds of a popular linux client. It's very clean, simple and easy to use...

mIRC doesn't make you pay ever.
Just open it, close it.
Re-open it.
Then at worst all you have to do is a little bit of waiting for the "continue" button to ungray out.

I run IRSSI through putty client. Works splendidly.
Has everything you need from the start and you can practically modify it anyway you want if you know some basic scripting. DL other people's scripts if not.
It's a command line based client though. Might scare some people away.

Because we can!

if that doesn't work uninstall, go into regedit and delete anything that has mirc in it. then reinstall.

And you people should learn to pay for one thing you regularly use.
I mean it costs $10 with the 50% off coupon <_<
mIRC after version 7 has no problems with Japanese, provided the sender is sending you data in utf format. Sjis support have been removed, which is a dumb concept and is the only new feature I wish mIRc lacked.
But if you know your way around mIRC, it's easily fixable ;)

Oh so you can still do that?

I bought it too after seeing that, seriously, waiting everytime I need to use mIRC is getting annoying, and I'm of course interested in supporting something I have used a lot during these years. I think I've used it for 4 years until now.

Currently I use Nettalk. Used XChat previously but the modded version I used earlier went kaputt...

very nifty for what I use it for.

The advantages are it's entirely open-source, support for multiple European languages (Dutch, Chinese, German, English, Spanish, Russian, and Hungarian), support for utf, supports large filesizes for dcc (downloading a +13GB file, with several interruptions? No problem. (even xchat had issues with files large as that...).)

There are disadvantages too though, the major one being no support for SSL (though I haven't tried so perhaps that info is old...)
If too many channels arem open the gui is a bit cluttered with those, making it a bit hard to find the right one (an optional treeview would be nice, or automatic sorting option).
There's no port for linux, or any other than windows. (Well, it's open source so someone might make one.)
It doesn't seem to have a limit on number of open channels (unlike xchat), but if too many along with too many dcc running, it might behave strangely, crash included...
But as said, for what I use it for, it's perfect...

I'm with Ace and relic. Chatzilla is clean, easy to use, and functional.

Unless you need a bazillion little different features that you probably won't use (it's a chat client ffs... and the xdcc works on it), Chatzilla is plenty good enough.

Cute, huh?

ChatZilla 4tw!

mIRC is The Best irc Client out There .. but it has a price
as for free clients
I've Tried Opera Chat .. it was simple & good (most times) .. until they reach opera browser v10.x & that illegal url Message. also hydraIrc .. In General it's Good but it has many flows since it's discontinued Project .
__________
BTW Does Chatzilla has Resume ability now ?? last time i used it was 2+ years ago

I've been using Opera's inbuilt irc client for the past few days, didn't run into any problems yet.

I just use mIRC... the popups are annoying at the start, but if you idle for a long time then it doesn't really matter.

i think they have fix it in the latest 10.62 or 61 release .. before this release .. any dcc click leads to illegal url error
it's still my Favorite Browser & Irc Chatter .. But When i Need To DCC a File .. mIRC is My Choice
