The map is 128 blocks high. The ocean surface divides this in 2 with 64 over and 64 under the ocean. Layers 1-4/5 have bedrock, meaning that there are 60 layers from sealevel to the bedrock. Lava can be found anywhere, but is very common at layers 1-10.

Ok, so I read in Notch's blog about him implementing piston mod in the future. So I thought, oh well, I might as well try it as a mod and once he releases it as official, i will just update the game and there will be no change.
So what is so awesome about pistons? Well they move blocks. So far the only thing I used them for was to create a "door" to my standard 3X2 ways. I always that that making corridors 2X2 feels claustrophobic, but then you can make double doors.
Also double doors have one big flaw about them. On one side it is opened, on the other side it is closed because the dor on one side is inverted in comparison to the other side. Thus if you make a simple circuit to open and close them at ones, one of them will always be opened. Of course it can be solved with an inverter, but as you know inverters have a delay, so one door will always lag a bit when opened and closed.
However I made a "door" of blast resistant pistons. Here it is:

when open

So far I have been messing around with pistons only one day, but from my experimentation I found out that they can control lave and water flow, they can launch players into the air, they can push any blocks except obsidian, they can push carts and many other things that I have not figured out yet.

Needs more official content like chairs... Don't like building stairs and sticking two signs on the sides ;), you can't even build them next to anything because of that. It's new so it's still awesome in comparison to many of the games you get these days.
Needs a lot more food and blocks, needs to fix performance issues to...
i7, HD5730, 4GB DDR3 and can only run at an average of 20FPS with Fancy Settings.
Hopefully soon what you'll be able to do will be limitless, and hopefully soon generated worlds will be even larger and you'll be able to mine deeper.

Here's a video showing some possibilities of pistons: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=salYX2iDyqs
What I'm most excited about is the fact that now we are FINALLY able to control water and lava flow using redstone! Lots of things I want to do with that. ^^

Well, I attempted to make traps with lava using pistons.
The biggest problem so far is when you cut off the flow, the lava will still linger in that are for a very long time. It works much better with water, I already have some plans to modify my boat dispenser to be more compact.
I wish there were also some kind of "sticky" pistons that would pull tiles when they went back to their original position.
