Can't you just put a piston on the other side? Activated by a pressure plate or button, which would make it retract automatically.

I got bored from the official game. So now I'm playing with mods. Mods that adds new mobs really make the game more entertaining like Mo' Creatures, MoreCreeps & Weirdos, Fairy and Quintessential Creatures. Unfortunately some of them are not compatible with 1.4 yet.
