I used a design similar to your stairway once, only one width of stairs block instead of two, and instead of lava I used natural light, it doubled as my day/night watch given how daylight works.

I had to rely on torches when I got to the bottom and began expanding my mine though. :P

Best place to find lava period is near the bottom of the Nether, problem is you need at least 10 blocks of lava before you can even reach the Nether. So until then dig and hope (and be careful, lava has a tendency to burn all your equipment when you die in it.)

FAWK MY LIBRARY DESIGN WAS OFF BY TWO BLOCKS AND NOW EVERYTHING IS RUIINNEEDDDDDD

Goddamit, this is why I dont like building huge structures...

my design is for 50 x 50, my actual library turned out to be 48 x 48

Use torches as markers, every 5th block gets a torch. After that it is simple math. I had myself a lot of problems with stuff like that, so now when I am building a foundation for a building, my head is constantly doing arithmetics.

Planning ahead is also important, if you want a big project to succeed.

^I mark everything with torches, for example to mark a few spots where i dug myself out or i make small towers and mark them with torches to find my way back. Torches can be used for everything! I tried something similar like you did with the lava, but mine ended up with burning wood :S

gotta love dem burnin wood.

But yeah, when I'm playing on my legit stuff, I ALWAYS have at least 4 stacks of torches on me, they're multipurpose-ness is just amazing.

Oh and I really hope you guys make charcoal from coal and use the charcoal... Cuz, you know, wood is abundant as f, but coal actually takes time to find? not to mention you can make like, 400 charcoal from one stack of coal?

Is it as efficient as normal coal? If so, Fuck year!
There must a be a reason for tanking things. And all must be in certain balance.
But what that balance is, must depend only on you, nobody else.

charcoal is essentially the EXACT SAME THING as coal, just with a different name.

So yeah, :P

I wonder if anyone has run out of resources before yet. I know the games are essentially unlimited, but there is a limit a hard limit to hardware or a limit on the software... still would be interesting to see.

Quote from: Notch
First of all, let me clarify some things about the “infinite” maps: They’re not infinite, but there’s no hard limit either. It’ll just get buggier and buggier the further out you are. Terrain is generated, saved and loaded, and (kind of) rendered in chunks of 16*16*128 blocks. These chunks have an offset value that is a 32 bit integer roughly in the range negative two billion to positive two billion. If you go outside that range (about 25% of the distance from where you are now to the sun), loading and saving chunks will start overwriting old chunks. At a 16/th of that distance, things that use integers for block positions, such as using items and pathfinding, will start overflowing and acting weird.

Those are the two “hard” limits.

Most other things, like the terrain generation seeds and entity locations use 64 bit doubles for locations, and they do much subtler things. For example, at extreme distances, the player may move slower than near the center of the world, due to rounding errors (the position has a huge mantissa, the movement delta has a tiny, so it gets cut off faster). The terrain generator can also start generating weird structures, such as huge blocks of solid material, but I haven’t seen this lately nor examined exactly what behavior causes it to happen. One major problem at long distances is that the physics starts bugging out, so the player can randomly fall into ground blocks or get stuck while walking along a wall.

I hope that answers the question on how infinite the world is.

Also, is anyone using minecarts for actual transportation? I find that boosters are the only thing that makes it useful for personal transportation, the powered minecart is just way to slow.

Notch is much more likely to improve them then to remove them, considering his credo about working on things until they're fun.

or just implement minecart mania! Or it would be cool if he could implement some sort of "powered track" with redstone that boosts the cart for you. But for right now my door booster works just fine.
