Help with internet speed issue
« on: October 14, 2010, 02:40:09 AM »
My Vista 32-bit edition is acting funny.  I'm on wireless, but I'm within 10 feet of my router so that should not be an issue.  I can get at most 30kb/s speed, and sometimes my network disconnects.  Internet is fine on all other computers though, just this one is acting weird.  Any ideas to fix it?

Oi oi wireless!? Cant help you there. Make sure cellphones and magnets are nowhere within the area, and that your wireless router is within line of sight, objects blocking it's path will make the signal worse.

It would also help to take a screenshot of your room so we could tell what the problem is.

Edit:

Oh yeah forgot to ask, do you have multiple wireless routers? They can conflict if the frequencies they're on are not far apart.

I have another laptop on my desk which gets normal speeds.  Nothing else is nearby, and I've unplugged any phones in my room.

Also, I have the latest drivers.  Windows 7 would be a pain to upgrade to, so vista is fine for me.

It just started happening all of a sudden.  And yes, of course I've rebooted the computer.  Suprisingly enough, If I dual boot into XP then there is absolutley no problem at all.  It's a software issue.  I've tried rolling back my drivers, but that didn't help at all.

Vista isn't something you should be using. Make sure you have the right drivers for your wifi, also try upgrading the firmware of your router

Have you looked up issues specifically for your wireless card dealing with vista?  I have seen a lot of hardware that misbehaves on vista, and some have work a rounds for them now.

Just remember,  before you criticize someone, walk a mile in there shoes.  That way you are a mile away and have their shoes. :P

Thinking about upgrading to windows 7 because I can't get it to work.  Clean install or upgrade?

Clean install. If you upgrade, the new system will most likely inherit all problems of the old system, including this problem.

Did you try moving closer to see if that helps?

Another ridiculous thing is if the wireless router has an antenna you have to make sure that the antenna is "facing" you.

I'm using an apple router, I can't tell which directions the antennas are facing.  The problem persists even if I am on top of it.  I know it a problem with vista because my netbook works just fine.

Well, there's no fun in wiping the OS and go for clean install, I'd persist in getting this problem solved.

Throw it away and try using a new one.  You could very well be dealing with sabotage from Cupertino.

Oi, Wireless here. Using "G" type config, with an ASUS p5k motherboard built in chip, I'm getting excellent singal. The router is like 10-15meters away with two about 15cm thick walls in the way.

Getting about 1,2MB max download speed,  with 20MBps connection. The router sometimes DC'es but that's because it's crappy and overloads from the amount of torrent connections.

Judging from my experiences - it's purely software/setup issue. I would recommend checking what type of network are you using (should be "G" or "N", eventually g/b mixed mode - anything else means you're screwed). Also check your router if it's not doing anything funny, like limiting the bandwidth on purpose (QoS options).

Nvm, all that i wrote, that's probably the reason. Now I even doubt that you will be able to access the router's control panel... Even if, it's worth checking, what kind of funny stuff apple did there by deafult.

Dam didn't notice that, since this is apple we're talking about yeah it's probably a router that only works with apple products.
