Also if you like those kind of games, I would recommend a more "mature" game, such as Europa Universalis 3.

I've never managed to finish an entire campaign in EU3, I always start over prior to that, it just takes sooo long when you grow large and have a decent amount to do.
I also like Alpha Centauri more than any of the Civilization games. The futuristic setting really added a lot to it. Choosing whether to go against or with the planet. ^^

Not even. Waste of 100$, 4 hours of gameplay.
Though it had the least repetitive single player campaign and the most weapons I've ever seen in an FPS.

Let me get this right your advising the guy to buy a game that has 4 hours of total gameplay. Because???
WTF are you smoking boi ?!?!?! it has THE MOST repetitive gameplay i have ever encountered ( I have been playing computer games since 1980 ). It goes like this.
Section A: Charge around wasting anything that moves. (Goto section B: run task)
Section B: Until you encounter an area with infinite spawning enemies. (Goto section C: run task)
Section C: Get to cover and keep killing until you realize you have taken out about 3.5 entire battalions. (Goto section D: run task)
Section D: Then realize its 'ONE OF THOSE' sections. Charge off and activate the next cutscene.
[Here's where the developers add that special magic] ( Goto section A: run task )
The best parts are the interrogation sections between the actual gameplay ( Seriously, not joking )
They are awesome great voice acting great dialogue, full of intrigue and tension and the suggestion that if you can focus on it long enough you can work out what the fuck is happening.
More weapons that you've ever seen in a FPS ............ Well i feel kinda depressed for you obviously you haven't played a lot of quality PC games, because if you had.
A. You'd have seen plenty of games with lots of different guns
B. You'd have realised that all the guns in Black Ops all shoot with exactly the same characteristics except fire rate = All the guns are the same.
Sorry son just had to get that off my chest.
Oh yeah to Thread starter. Best advice so far is the STALKER series they are truly breathtaking games, not without faults but great games and the 1st two are BIG, best one is STALKER CLEAR SKIES, original is very good too Call of pripyat is ok but a lesser version of the 1st two.
Metro 2033 is good too but rather buggy.

Did you read the "not even" part? And shit, by non repetitive I meant compared to the other CODs.
This one you get to drive boats, cars, helicopters, command a group of 4 soldiers like in an RTS (Example: Warcraft III, Starcraft II)
With weapons, there are alot more than I've seen in other games (Battlefield, Bad Company 2, MW2, etc).
Melee weapons and other things which I've never seen in an FPS seeing they all focus on guns (well duh, it's a shooter)

Oh i see. Ok m8 sorry i got wrong end of your post. Have to say though you didn't make it very clear what you meant ..... try to write so people can easily understand you rather than as you might speak.
But i still stand by my critique of the gameplay and weapons in Black Ops ...... they are a joke.
Am tempted to give you a break by not commenting on your assertion that you "command" other soldiers and "drive" vehicles.
But i can't . By command you mean direct to pre defined locations all 5-6 of them, and by drive you mean the badly implemented 'on rails' BS that is supposed to be driving the vehicles.
lol ..... you really should expect more from your games than that.
Obviously you didn't even understand my critique of the weapons ...... yeah obviously its a shooter = guns.
But in decent games the guns actually have 'firing characteristics' that are individual to each model of gun ( like in the real world ) .... Duh.
By firing characteristics i mean effective range, recoil, fire rate, handling, penetration, damage, etc, most assault rifles also have a fire mode selector so you can choose full auto, burst, or single shot. They also model things like shot falloff so you need to aim above a target outside your guns optimum range. ....... in black ops there is non of that the only real difference are the add-ons and the fire rate ....... essentially the different guns are just skins = not actually different guns ....... Am baffled that any relatively intelligent mammal wouldn't notice this.
Quake II had more varied and realistic gun firing characteristics than black ops ....... for real.
Hell most fantasy/Scifi FPS have more varied and realistic firing characteristics.
Not being snotty or anything but all the 'military based' FPS like the ones you mention are all jokes.
Much better if people want a less challenging game based FPS, choose something like UT series or FEAR as
At least in those the fantasy nature allows the developers to actually be creative.
When it comes to military FPS the strategic based ones are the only ones deserving mention, Ghost Recon, Rainbow six, ARMA, Operation flashpoint, etc. All quite challenging but fantastically rewarding and great fun once you've spent some time and intelligence on them
