I wanted to be a High School teacher in Japan teaching kids English... turns out that one of the qualifications was... knowing Japanese.
I'm only 1,943 joyo kanji out of the 1,945 away from knowing enough to teach them English... It'll be rough for me to learn that much.

philosophy is based on writings and second thing after thinking philosophers need to know is how to write :D
there is no real philosophy without writing and no non written philosophy can take place without written word...

Actually it's mostly due to the fact that language is the only way to communicate your thoughts to the world outside your head. Therefore one needs to be sufficiently proficient in the usage of language to be able to formulate ones mad schemes into understandable form.
And that's why philosphers need to know how to write just like carpenters need to know how to wield a hammer. Tools of the trade.

Socrates didn't seem to need to know how to write.

Wasn't that because people wrote for him based on what he verbally communicated?

Well, 1,945 is the amount a kid in Japan should know by the time High School is over... (and are they over at 17 or 18? And if it's 18, what is the age of consent in Japan?..... JUST KIDDING... sooo not kidding ....)
