Gigabit FTTH coming to Canada
« on: October 22, 2010, 03:25:22 AM »
Whee, I'm excited! I didn't think it would ever happen, but it seems like Shaw has put in a gigabit fiber network into Vancouver and some area near Calgary, and offering gigabit service. So awesome. They even let them try out the service for free for six months.

Just a matter of time before they put the service into my area. Oh man.

Telus, the main competitor for Internet service, already has a fiber optic service, but it's at a measly 15 megabit, or 25 mb in some areas. Absolutely ridiculous.

Ever think about moving to Canada? The next few months would be a great time to. ;D

Not that one, that's Nitro, though it is fiber. =P
Check Shaw's site. They have a new one.

Wait what... a gig to home!?!

If that's the case I am fucking jealous.

The best speed you can get in NB is 70mbps down and 15mbps up with fibre using aliant. Rogers is the same download speed but shitty upload speed.
I wonder how long before Aliant offers 100mbps down and better upload... I don't see them offering gig connection to homes anytime soon. Even tho they have now a 100% fibre network in the province and offer fibre to home. I've read that the old NBtell network (now owned by aliant) was 10gbps backbone speed. Should be a lot faster now... but who knows.
I miss NBtell :'(

Now I want shawn here... better yet EastLink I like that company... something that is not owned by the big 3 ISP's.

I guess if I REALLY wanted a gig connection or faster with aliant I could get it with a dedicated connection... Only problem with that is it's very expensive >_>

Damn you all! Now I hope Aliant really kicks up the speeds they offer soon... They could offer fucking amazing speeds with ease with the new network the NB tax payers payed for.

Oh well, 200/200/80/80 d/u/d/u will be enough until the ISP decides to increase the speed :)

Not to mention that my current equipment can't handle much more than that. 3x700MHz has some limits.

I was wondering why I never heard of Aliant. Seems they only service the Atlantic provinces.

EastLink seems to offer similar services to Shaw. For both, the current fastest is 100/5. What's the pricing for EastLink? That's something they don't tell you right away. Shaw offers it for $150/month. Bundling is $10 off/month.

I looked into AllStream for a dedicated connection. For 10Mb symmetric, it was like $1716/month about a year ago. I wonder what it is now.

Tomoya - hope that's not satellite Internet. Satellite Internet is damn unreliable, and cuts out at least once every five minutes.

It's DSL.  I still get disconnects and PPPOE login failures all the time.

They're also selling bandwidth soon in Canada... so expect some big expansions soon.

Sounds like Telus's High Speed. Absolutely terrible. I worked in a company once that uses Telus High Speed, and it cut out at least 3 times a week, sometimes for hours on end, and sometimes several times a day. I guess you get what you pay for.

I didn't realize the heavy stress that wireless companies get on their networks for mobile Internet, but I guess it makes sense when you think about it.

With the recent new entrants to the cell market in western Canada... I can see things going wonky with usage. We also have some high levels of usage via post secondary institutions (Alberta has 4 universities alone, not counting Colleges. SAIT is a big player too) and we have a lot of corporate HQs here too, which add a bit here and there.

Phones...

Wind mobile is cheap, but their network sucks. Might improve though later on.
Koodo is a Telus spin off I think.
I dunno what happened to Virgin

Telus
Rogers
Fido (owned in different areas by Rogers and someone else I think)

Lots of entrants to the smart phone market.

I hear Shaw is hopping in sometime soon too.

Yeah Aliant only does the Atlanic region, now they are partly owned by Bell (yay :P) but they've been great so fare. I think EastLink is around the same as all the other providers. I never used them since they only offer services in NS and the border town to NS in NB.

I contacted Aliant and for 20/20 connection dedicated line it would cost me around 1.4k a month, from what I've been reading online this is the normal price for the type of connection. I believe a 100/100 connection would cost me 9k a month. You would not be using a dedicated connection for home use, rather for a business. Great thing about Aliant is that they are friendly to businesses that require dedicated connections and that will use A LOT of BW. Hell, even a home connection they don't care how much BW you consume every month.

I think we're paying 44 CAD for 7.5/.75. Technically our package is for 5/.5 but being a long time member, we got a free upgrade. (Shaw btw)

Oh yeah, how could I forget about Bell?

I don't think that's really such old news... I never noticed it before though, to be fair.
And yes, Shaw's had fiber in for a long time. That said, gigabit speeds is new. Their backbone is 33Gbps, according to a friend who got lucky enough to get onto the backbone once. Filled up a whole terabyte in a matter of a couple hours.
And like the "rusty" guy said, the problem with speeds these days is the lack of upload speed. Being a BBT member, I don't care as much about the down speed as the up speed.

Odd, though, that I haven't heard about Shaw doing this, being a Shaw customer in Edmonton. September was almost a full month ago.

I think we're paying 44 CAD for 7.5/.75. Technically our package is for 5/.5 but being a long time member, we got a free upgrade. (Shaw btw)

Oh yeah, how could I forget about Bell?

We're getting 7.5/0.5 for $37 a month (normally $47 but it's bundled with phone). And yes that's Shaw. BTW I don't think Shaw offers a plan with 0.75 up.

And Bell sucks. Except for their satellite TV. =D

I just laugh at this, the Australian Government over here is already rolling out the 1Gbps National Broadband Network to 93% of Australians, the rollout in the state of Tasmania is half-completed and has started construction in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia with thousands of customers already connected. Australia beat Canada to a FTTH network :P

Great, now even Australia has it, and here we only got 25mbps max on Zone 1 coverage.

I'm paying 45CAD for 15/1 from Telus. Up time is excellent too, I can only recall one afternoon of DNS downtime.

And Telus doesn't monitor my bandwidth usage due to Telus TV also using ADSL2+.
