Why did you even need a link scanner?
Just get Kaspersky AV, its real time protection is good enough so you don't have to worry about clicking something wrong, and the firewall that came with Windows is good enough.

Thought it was an addon. Kaspersky no go, its memory leaks took up something like 200% CPU.

You were using the IS(Internet Security) version, that's the one all should avoid. Kaspersky Anti-Virus is good enough for the average user.

Use Microsoft Security Essentials as an antivirus/antispyware   it's very good and fast.

Clean your system with WinOptimizer/TuneUpUtilities or some other crappy software, it doesn't matter - they all suck. use ccleaner afterwards (this one doesn't suck).

If you don't have a SSD, defrag your disk after you cleaned all the shit up. Use O&O Defrag, it's the only one that does the job done.

P.S.: McAfee, Norton, DrWeb, Kaspersky and other software that have the names of 'human beings' tend to suck.

Without Aero Peeks, using combined taskbar mode is almost impossible.

Sounds more like a dodgy copy you downloaded. NOD32 has nothing to do with AVG, different program by a different company entirely.
